I just found out a guide out of Bakersfield is guiding Asian water buffalo for $2000. I wish I had the money. They're pretty cool animals. I'm not sure how many he's got or how long they'll last. I've been to the ranch for his bison, sheep, and pig hunts, and it was a pretty good hunt on very open land. Not a canned hunt, but I don't know what the Asian water buffalo hunts are like. I do know his regular bison were pretty wild relatively speaking. We couldn't get too close without them bolting or getting agressive like they were going to charge.

The guide's name is Mike and his number is 397-7008. If you go, post some pictures. I've been on the ranch and seen the bison. They are what I would call free range and they were very impressive in size, but when I was on the ranch I didn't get to observe a bison hunt since I was there for sheep. I did see a few pigs while I was there, but I didn't look too carefully at them because I didn't want to be tempted. LOL.

Is mike the rancher doing outfitting on the side or an outfitter with a lease to the ranch? Whats the ranch name and where is it located? I'm guessing somewhere on the Carrizo Plain.

They got Asian buffalo, sheep AND bison? hmmm what else they got?

wonder how much for a Buffalo hunt? If it's $2000 that would be about $2 per lb. Thats alotta buffalo burgers...

He's a licensed guide with access to the ranch. This ranch is near Bitterwater road. He has access to other ranches, but on those he just runs pig, bobcat, and bear hunts. I think this is the only ranch he has with exotics and such, but I might be wrong. His bison hunts start at $1500, but I'm not sure how he prices them after that. I know the heard I saw when I was there was out in the open with plenty of acres to roam free and that all of the ones I saw in the heard were respectable. When I was there for the sheep hunts someone shot a bison and it was pretty big. They took a backhoe, I think is what it was, to lift it and skin it and so forth. It's almost too warm for a bison hunt now unless you just want the meat. For hides the best time is November to February. I've gotten bison in late March before and sometimes they come out okay, but sometimes the hair is spotty because they're molting. I don't think it matters with water buffalo so much because they aren't hairy like bison.
