Well I was suppose to head out early this morning with Woodgrain for a Quickie before church. Needless to say he didnt make it out, so I went solo! Saw a bunch of Mallard and a few Redheads, but nothing in range for a freezer shot. Headed down from where the duck were flying to a large field and noticed a bunch of honkers coming in! Before I could get into place near the center of field, they dropped in about 80 yards from me, while I was face down in the dirt in the middle of some sage brush. After about 25 minutes of inching towards the group another flight landed behind me about 200 yards out and made me move even slower! I finally got myself into a comfortable range to get a good clean shot. All of a sudden every bird popped up and eyeballed me! I set for the shot and as they started to lift, I dropped the largest honker in the group! Being that this was my first honker of the season, I was already excited when I approached to collect my airbound bus only to see the she had jewelry! I hate to admit it, but I jumped around a screamed like a kid! Of course I had to get Woodgrain on the phone right then to let him know what he missed out on! It was a great hunt and defintely paid off to go slow and take the one I wanted. Hopefully we can take a few more before the closer!
