Fourth Deer Farm Quarantined in CWD Case

State animal health officials have quarantined a fourth deer farm in its on-going investigation of how Chronic Wasting Disease is spreading throughout Wisconsin. On Wednesday, the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture said a Dane County farm that supplied some animals to a Portage County farm where CWD was found last month is being quarantined as a precaution.
Assistance State Veterinarian Bob Ehlenfeldt said the latest quarantine took effect Friday at the Mark and Doug Deegan farm near Brooklyn. Two other game farms are also under quarantine after they purchased animals from Buckhorn Flats Game Farm in Almond, which owned a deer that tested positive for the fatal deer disease in September.
Ehlenfeldt says the DATCP may up to kill 25 deer on one of the farms to determine if other animals are infected. Agriculture officials say only 131 farms have had more than one animal tested for CWD since it was first discovered in Wisconsin in February.
