I have hunted in Mt Luguna for Deer this year and had a sucessful year, but during the time up there I noticed lots and lots of Ground Quail. I figured I might give them a try with my bow. My first question is it legal to shoot them up there or to shoot quail with a bow? The second is I remember seeing this tip attachment years ago that Iowa Archers used on flying birds like pheasants, it looked like four loops of heavy guage wire in a 4 leaf clover shape with the center having a blunt or judo type point on it. It would smack the crap out of the birds rendering them senseless or killing them. I have looked for those tips but have yet to find them, do any of you know what I am talking bout? If so could you let me in on where to get some.
Thanks

Dmac,
Not sure how the seasons work down south where you are, but you can definitely take quail with a bow (check the DFG book for specifics). I know there's a special archery season for them that kind of coincides with early archery seasons too, but you are allowed to use your bow during gun season.
I've seen the tips you're talking about in Cabelas (http://www.cabelas.com/archery), but I imagine you can find them on most archery supply websites too. The ones Cabelas has are called "Snaro" tips. I imagine there are lots of brand names, though.
May also wanna consider flu-flu fletching.
Let me know how it goes. I was tempted several times during the B-zone archery season to let fly at some quail with a field point, but didn't want to lose my arrows. I'm also thinking seriously about trying pheasant with my bow.
I am leaving tomorrow night to go quail hunting for a few days up above Lake Isabella. I haven't had a chance to scout the area but last year I saw a bunch load. I am taking my shotgun and my recurve. I just went to Hi-Tech Archery in Fullerton (714.449.9744) where I picked up some new arrows they had set-up for me. I also picked up two of those wire heads you guys are talking about. They have two sizes, one is real small about 3inches in diameter and the larger size, the ones I bought are probably twice as big, but I left them in the truck so don't quote me. They cost ten bucks each. I believe the smaller size was the same price. The small ones are pretty darn small. I hope I get a chance to try the wire heads out.
I have a friend who owns about 23 acres near goat mountain, which is just a stones throw from Laguna mountain(if you guys are talking about the San Benito area Laguna mtn). When I was there earlier this year even after the SB river had dried up I saw a s*?t load of quail. I am hoping to get up there later in the season. I also say wild turkey just off the road, just before the turn off to the clear creek road. My friend said another one of her friends shot a pig off of Laguna mtn.
Drmac - Congratulations on the deer!!
Good hunting to all.
