New ready-to-fish kit is packed with non-toxic (lead-free) fishing tackle, biodegradable baits and tackle, and instructions on how to use it. Funds raised through sale of kits advances the Stewardship Ethic through non-profit group Recycled Fish.
Council Bluffs, Iowa -- The fish are biting in lakes and streams across the country as spring weather warms the waters, so it's a great time to wet a line. New S.A.F.E. Angling Kits put the right gear in anglers' hands to not only catch fish, but to steward fisheries while they're at it.
S.A.F.E. Angling Kits are tackle boxes loaded with lead-free sinkers and lures, biodegradable molded lures and floats, circle hooks and cam-action single hooks. Every kit also includes how-to information to get new anglers started fishing, and Stewardship Tips that will help you live a lifestyle of stewardship.
S.A.F.E. Angling stands for Sustaining Angling, Fish and Ecosystems. Proceeds from the sale of the kits support Recycled Fish - the national non-profit organization of anglers - people who love to fish - living a lifestyle of stewardship both on and off the water, because our lifestyle runs downstream.
The project is being launched in cooperation with the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Their 'Get The Lead Out' campaign has educated anglers and hunters in Minnesota over the past decade on the benefits of switching to non-toxic sinkers and lures.
"We're excited about growing our program to include a product that people can find in retail stores," says Amanda Baribeau, Source and Toxicity Reduction Specialist at the PCA. "These kits give anglers a chance to try many of the quality lead-alternative weights on the market from reputable manufacturers."
Anglers who purchase one of the initial offering of kits have a chance to win a $50 Gift Card from the store they bought their kit from by participating in a survey after they've tried their kit.
Why use S.A.F.E. gear?
When lead sinkers are lost through broken fishing lines or other means, birds like loons, swans, ducks and geese inadvertently eat them and die. Eating just one lead sinker can poison a loon. Eagles can ingest lead by eating fish that have themselves swallowed lead sinkers. In loon breeding areas - the Great Lakes, northeastern United States and eastern Canada - studies show that lead poisoning accounts for about 25 percent of dead loons found by researchers. In some areas, up to 50 percent of loon mortality is caused by lead.
Traditional soft plastic lures don't break down and can be ingested by fish. They cause blockages that slow the fish's growth or lead to its death. Estimates suggest that as much as 20 million pounds of plastic get put in the water supply every year due to soft plastic fishing lures.
"Fisheries are a canary in the coal mine for problems in our broader environment," says Teeg Stouffer, Recycled Fish Executive Director. "Since our lifestyle runs downstream, we can look at what's happening with fish and identify problems to come in our drinking water supply, among other things."
"I call this a tackle box with a conscience," says Recycled Fish SAFE Angling Director, Finn Horvath. "People who fish are passionate about taking care of the waters and the fish they love, and S.A.F.E Angling Kits give them quality tackle to do that, affordably."
S.A.F.E. Angling kits include hooks from Tru-Turn and Daiichi; non-toxic weights from Water Gremlin, Bullet Weights and Dr. Drop; Northland "Nature Jigs"; FoodSource Lures biodegradable earthworms or mealworms; and Thill wood floats packed into a Flambeau tackle box.
S.A.F.E. Angling Kits are available for $14.99 online at www.GreenTackle.com (http://www.greentackle.com/), Red Rock Wilderness Store, or at these sporting goods stores: Joe's Sporting Goods in St. Paul, Minnesota; Red Rock Wilderness Store in Ely, Minnesota; Wolf Tackle in Lincoln, Nebraska and Woods Sporting Goods in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
