messed up twice already.....hopefully there won't be 3 of the same post....LOL....well here goes:
Was up hunting Dusy Ersham Trail last Thursday - Sunday....hunted pretty hard Friday with no luck.....and as the weatherman informed us that it was going to be a balmy 96 deg. over the weekend we decided to take the truck (with a heater as our water bottles froze over night) and hunt down by Florence lake......towards the afternoon we decided to give up and head back to camp....just as we were pulling up to camp my buddy spots some florecent orange 250 yards up the hill......we look through our glasses and to our surprize see a fat doe with a radio collar on....I step out and load my rifle.....about this time another deer steps out and I see it's a leagle buck....I hold my breath and squeeze.....meat in the freezer.....the funny thing is that if that doe hadn't been wearing that collar we'd of never seen her or the buck.....anyway's here's a pic.....forgive the bad pic as my new $8.00 throw away camarra wasn't working to good.....

Alright, BirdDawg! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif
I'll take that meat in the freezer anytime!
That's why they don't tag the bucks, you know, because it'll make 'em too easy for hunters. I guess this one didn't read the warning, though, and was hanging out with that flourescent doe!

BirdDawg,
Congrats on the buck. I was on Dusy Ersham on the opender. I have never been on that trail before, all I can say it is one ROUGH jeep trail. We took it as far back as our 4x4 allowed us to go and hoofed the rest of it. It was so packed at the beginning of the trailhead, looked like a parking lot at albertsons. We didnt see any deer, asked a hunter on the way out. He said he saw 7 does over the next ridge and thats it. Hunted from Ersham to Florence saw a bunch of does and one forkie. I wont get into what happended with me and that forkie......lol Anyways, hope to get back up there when the weather cools down a lot and the snow starts falling. Happy Hunting.

Nice buck! Congrats! Is it legal to ride a quad in D-7 (sierra forest)?? It is illegal to ride aaanything not street legal here in D-8 (sequia forest)?? I have a couple quads (and a D-7 tag) that I would like to bring up.

BirdDawg,
Nice looking Quad..My buddies are heading back up there tonight. Wish I could go but I gotta work. Boy does that trail look familiar....LOL. I was talking to the guy who runs the pack station at Florence Lake and he told me the warden poped a guy for having one in the chamber while riding his quad in that area. Said he impounded his quad and took his rifle. Ouch, costly mistake http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hair-raisin-blue.gif

well anyone who would ride around with a loaded gun is a fool looking for trouble.....it's legal to have shells in the magazine off road(or was unless the laws have changed).so I guess losing his quad and rifle is a small deal compared to losing his buddy that was riding next to him when his gun went off.

I've been up there several times when it snowed.....and enjoyed almost every time it did......but 1 year it snowed pretty hard......dang blizzard.....LOL........was in the 80's on Friday and come saturday mornig-winter wonderland.......hunted the bowl around indian lake and was waist high in snow......brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr........but had a good trip even though I didn't see any deer........the best I've seen it was about 6 years agao when an early storm came and drove the deer out of the high country......was hunting by mamoth pools and just about to vista point when the biggest buck I've ever seen walked out 10 feet in front of me.......jumped out of the truck.....threw a round in and leaned against the door for a rest.....*PLOP*....the dang door shut and I fell on me arse....LOL.....needless to say that ol buck is still up there.......but if we get a pretty good storm you might try up by mamoth pools......migration path......they'll run you down if you don't move.

I think hunting in the snow like you described would be pretty awesome. Ive hunted in the snow, but nothing compared to what you described. Mamoth Pools and Vista Point huh? Cant say I know where that is..I guess its time to break out the map and take a look.

Thats where I've been doing all of my deer hunting this season. It's a long drive but worth it, especially since all the forrest down here is closed. I got into a good covey of mtn. quail near vista point on opening weekend. I've been concentrating on the squaw dome area. I saw two bucks opening morning and does ever since. Has anyone hunted around the granite creek area? I'm thinking about trying that area this weekend. How high are the bucks in D7 right now?

Don't know how high the bucks are.....but with all the hunting pressure this year if a guy/gal is willing to walk and get back off away's from the road I think they'd have a real good chance at a nice buck.
