Nation's Premier Saltwater Fishing Championship Returns To Pensacola
9/23/08
Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup tournament held at 31st annual Pensacola Seafood Festival
PENSACOLA, Florida - The nation's premier saltwater fishing championship makes its final stop of the regular season in Pensacola, Florida when The Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup will dock its boats at the Florida panhandle September 26-28 during the Pensacola Seafood Festival and will likely be the tastiest tournament yet.
The three-day fishing frenzy officially begins at 6 a.m. CT on Friday, Sept. 26 with the morning launch and ends with the dramatic final day weigh-in at 3 p.m. CT on Sunday, Sept. 28 when one teams walks away with the $50,000 grand prize. Weigh-ins will take place at 3 p.m. Friday through Sunday on the waterfront in Bartram Park.
"This is the second year we're visiting Pensacola and we're excited to be back," said Steve Levi, general manager of fishing properties for Career Sports & Entertainment, the agency that owns the Redfish Cup. "We really enjoy being a part of such a big annual celebration - the food, the fans, the fishing - it's all great here in Pensacola."
Last year's visit to Pensacola was quite memorable because it was the championship event, but also because a tropical depression threatened to blow away the tournament. Luckily the storm moved quickly overnight resulting in one of the closest competitions ever. Floridians Mark Sepe and Andrew Bostick took the 2007 title with a mere 1.28 ounces more than the second place team.
Sepe and Bostick are quickly earning a Tiger Woods-like reputation in the sport of fishing. As returning 2007 champions, they've also won two of the three events of the 2008 season; the first in Punta Gorda, Fla. and again in Hopedale, La. They also hold the number one spot for the Academy Team of the Year presented by Crocs award.
The Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup won't be the only highlight of the weekend. The 2008 season of the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup also marks a new community outreach initiative called Net Gains presented by ARC Dehooker. The program allows local youth the opportunity to attend a free fishing and conservation clinic taught by the Redfish Cup pros on Thursday, Sept. 25 from 5 to 6 p.m. at Academy Sports + Outdoors in Pensacola, Fla. (8102 N. Davis Hwy). Ages seven and up are welcome and all attendees will receive a Redfish Cup goodie bag and a photo with their favorite angler upon completion.
Additionally, the 31st annual Pensacola Seafood Festival, presented by Fiesta of Five Flags Association, offers the most fantastic seafood that the Gulf coast is famous for, a 5K run/walk for all ages sponsored by the Pensacola Runners Association and Fiesta of Five Flags Association and an activity area for children at the Pensacola News Journal's "Pelican Park," also known as Bartram Park. It will also showcase more than 200 arts and crafts vendors who travel from around the globe each year to participate in the three-day festival. The crowd-pleasing Splash Dogs will also be among the festivities this weekend.
"Pensacola is proud to be a destination for the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup again this year," said Whitney Vaughan, public relations and marketing coordinator of Fiesta of Five Flags. "Having a world-class fishing tournament as a part of our seafood festival raises the bar and helps us to attract even more people to our annual event."
In addition to wonderful art and fantastic fresh seafood, the Pensacola Seafood Festival features some of the area's best bands and great family entertainment. The entertainment stage is at beautiful Fountain Park at the south end of Seville Square. Musical entertainment begins Friday at 4 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at noon.
The Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup event in Pensacola will be televised as a two-part episode airing Oct. 11 and Oct. 18 at 8:30 a.m. ET on ESPN2.
Now in its sixth season, the Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup has become the nation's premier saltwater fishing championship. The event will visit five venues across the Southeast in 2008 and give away more than $1 million in prize and contingency monies.
Pensacola, Fla. is the fourth and final stop of the 2008 regular season. The championship will be held in Biloxi/D'Iberville, Miss. Oct. 10-12. Each event features a $50,000 grand prize and more than $193,000 in total payout.
