View Full Version : What is the worst tasting food you've eaten???
For me it is salmon eggs.
One of my wife's colegues(sp) is Russian and when we went to have dinner at her house the appitiser(sp) was slices of bread, salmon eggs, butter and slices of turkey breast which we put together the way we liked. I, being open to all foods and never having eaten anything that I really just didn't like, asked how a Russian would make up this appitiser(sp)? She said to spread some butter on the bread, cover it with salmon eggs and eat, which I did.
OOOOH WAS IT BAD!!!
I actually started to dry heave but choked it back so I wouldn't offend our host. It tasted just like what the salmon eggs that I fish with smell like. I tried it a 2nd time that night, just to be sure that I didn't like it and, 'though I didn't almost heave this time, it still was the worst thing that I have ever eaten.
Don't get me wrong I have eaten and enjoyed flying fish roe on sushi and things like that but this was just....Yucky, for lack of a better word.
Truth is that I'll try it again the next time we have dinner there.
I just can't accept that there is some food that I don't like.

Welcome to Jesse's MJW!
Unlike you, I have no problem admitting there are foods I don't like. I pretty much dislike most seafood, with the exception of certain fish that are cooked properly.
I think that the worst thing I've eaten was some Thai dish. I forget exactly what it was. Maybe larb or something. I like most all Thai dishes, so that was a big surprise. Absolutely disgusting stuff.

For me it's escargo otherwise known as snails, my uncle made them once for us & I'll NEVER eat that stuff again. The other thing is refried beans, I think what did me in on this is the fact that I've changed diapers on my kids & those beans look like the same thing. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-ren.gif

Kernhuntr, you reminded me of a story. My partner and I got to talking to a DFG biologist one time and he happened to mention stopping to talk to a Cambodian family at a campground one time. They were roasting ground squirrels in the campfire and eating them from one end of the critter to the other. They invited him to dinner but he declined. Different cultures from what we're accustomed to can certainly be different in their eats.
I'm not sure what the worse thing I've ever eaten was but I had a raw oyster that wasn't very good. I normally like oysters so this one really surprised me. I sucked that sucker in and it was just like a mouthful of foul tasting snot. I couldn't spit it out on the restaurant table so I swallowed it and tried to keep it down. Guess I made it because no one I was eating with had to change their shirt.
On second thought the worse thing I've ever eaten was a liver burrito from a lunch truck in Santa Ana. I got food poisoning and was out of work for 3 days. It was another week before I felt completely recovered. I still can't taste liver without gagging. Shame, I used to really like liver, onions, and bacon.

Mentioned in an older thread that the worst thing I've eaten was a year-old salmon egg that fell into my sandwich. I was standing above the sandwich, which was sitting on the top of a cooler, opened the jar out of curiosity, and didn't notice that one had fallen and managed to roll its way between the two sub halves.
With that out of the way, I hafta say that Lima beans are pretty gross, too.

Seagull is probably the worst tasting thing I ever ate. Long story from way back in early history, but even as a kid I had the motto of "kill it-eat it".
Second worst goes to hooded merganser, which is actually pretty danged close to seagull.

We had a family member give us a few packages of Moose that he had killed in Alaska. It probably would have been good meat, but the animal was shot in the rut, ran for a long distance and built up a lot of adrenaline before it died, not allowed to hang for any time, loaded into the pack of a pickup for the long drive back to the SF bay area, where it was immediately cut and wrapped. When I opened the package to put a marinade on the meat, I wondered why the meat was a different color and smelled strange. I thought, "well, maybe this is what moose meat looks like." We barbequed it and sat down to a nice dinner. The first bite made me almost throw up. Not wanting the meat to go to waste, or hurt my father's feelings (it was his nephew's moose), I added more salt and cut a smaller bite. Still tasted rotten. Added more pepper and cut an even smaller bite; that just made my mouth burn. The finally decided to try ketchup. That made it even worse. Needless to say, I couldn't eat the meat. Dad just laughed at me and pushed his plate away and we settled for a turkey sandwich. I think, now, that the meat was rotten. YUCK!!!!
Moral of the story - I won't eat game that is not processed properly!!

Hands down Haggis is the nastiest stuff. When i was in korea they dry squid and salt them, They hang the squid in this thing that look like popcorn maker. You cant walk past the thing with out gagging. It tastes just as bad as it smells. Also they eat Kimshi over there wich is cabbage that has ferminted in a steel pot that was buried in the ground for a month.

Oooohhh... kimchi good stuff. I found a kimchi store near me in the local Korean district and got a big jar for just a few bucks. Heck, it's just oriental sauerkrauet.
Haggis, now... as a kilt wearing Scot I'm suposed to like that. But after my aforementioned experience with some bad liver I can't bring myself to do it.

poi.....
Poi isn't too bad.
I didn't think the taste was bad but the texture was a little strange (It has been years since I have had it but if I remember right it was kind of gluelike).
It is still Salmon Roe for me. Tastes like bait smells.

I normally eat pretty much anything but got some raw oysters down in Mexico one time that were bad. They were served in a glass mixed with onion slices I guess to kill the smell.
Oh yea, I don't duck hunt anymore either.
