Hybrid Wolf Pups Euthanized
Seven pups born to a Mexican gray wolf were euthanized after wildlife officials determined the pups were hybrids, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) officials announced Monday.
A genetic analysis suggested the pups? father was either a dog or wolf-dog hybrid, according to officials with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The female wolf, the litter and a male wolf made up a pack that was captured in May in New Mexico?s Gila National Forest after a private landowner complained that the wolves were killing livestock.
The adults had previously been released in the area as part of a government effort to re-establish Mexican gray wolves in Arizona and New Mexico.
The pups were euthanized under a rule in the policy governing the federal wolf reintroduction program. The seven pups were killed Monday, Victoria Fox of the USFWS said.
The adult wolves are being kept in captivity at the Sevilleta National Wildlife Refuge in New Mexico.
