I have an AR in 6.8 rem SPC that I want to put a different scope on. It has a 3-9x42 mildot now. I have a IOR 4-14x50 with a MP8. Its larger; and I wonder if it is simply too much scope for this cal?

It's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
The 4-14x50 might be a little longer and heavier than the 3-9, but who cares? I personally like seeing the individual hairs on the critter I'm about to shoot.

I have a 6.8 also and went with the Bushnell Holosight with magnifier. Works Ok, but when I anticipate longer ranges than say 200 yards (not often for me), I switch to a regular rifle scope.
Mine is a 3x9x40 and works great. Very typical scope. The only concern I would have about yours is how large your Objective lens is. I also have a 8-24x50 scope I bought as a toy, but had a very difficult time getting it to clear the rifle. Had to put high rise rings, and I really don't care for how high that puts the scope.
Might want to make sure it will fit first. As for too much? Probably not, but you'll have a tougher time with closer range shots.

Bottom line, the rifle will likely be able to shoot better than you can at 9x magnification, ceteris paribus. At 14x magnification you should see some noticable improvment in group size at 100 to 200+ yards vs. 9x magnification.
Of course, if you have a crappy barrel, crappy ammo, crappy crown, crappy trigger, and crappy execution of the shot, then all the magnification in the world won't help the rifle shoot any better.
