Women to Gather at the Brownells Big Springs Range near Montezuma, Iowa for Ladies "Novice" Handgun Camp

5/29/08

Ladies of all ages, spanning from 21 to 71, will gather at Brownells Big Springs Range, west of Montezuma, from the 18th to 21st of September, 2008 to learn about the shooting sports; many of them touching a gun for the first time in their lives.

Founder and chief instructor of the camp is Kay Clark-Miculek, who hosts several of these "ladies only" camps across the U.S. every year. As Kay said; "our goal is to teach our lady campers that shooting is a safe, enjoyable, and rewarding sport for women of all ages. The number one concern and the first topic we cover at camp is gun safety." Kay is very familiar with gun safety, she is the nine time national handgun champion of the United States Practical Shooting Association (USPSA) Open Division, the eleven time champion of the USPSA 3-gun title (rifle, pistol and shotgun) and has also won numerous other national and world class shooting competitions.

Kay is assisted with the camps by Deb Ferns, author of Babes With Bullets, and according to Deb these camps are "½ pajama party and ½ firearms education." Ferns is a corporate meeting planner in Tucson, AZ. "I never picked up a firearm until I was 45 years old," says Deb, "Now I can't imagine not being involved in shooting sports. It has increased my confidence level and I love making new friends across the country."

The $450 cost includes all range fees, professional instruction, and housing for three nights. Smith & Wesson provides loaner guns and holsters for novice shooters who do not have their own equipment. Additional support is offered to the camps through the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) and USPSA.

The Babes With Bullets camps, as they are informally known, are specifically oriented toward newcomers to the sport, so that "they (beginners) can learn about shooting in a friendly, low-pressure, and supportive environment, which is what Kay along with her other excellent female instructors provides" according to Ferns. To sign up for the camp at the Brownells Big Springs Range, visit Kay's website of www.Bang-Inc.com (http://www.bang-inc.com/) . Now, that sounds like a fun weekend too. I wish they had more of this stuff in Michigan.

Looks like I may have to get some of these things started myself.

(Did I just say that?)
