Map and compass camp-out at Scofield Reservoir

Salt Lake City — Women can learn the basics of map reading and using a compass to navigate the backcountry by attending a Map and Compass Camp-out that will be held Sept. 20 – 21.

The camp-out will be held at the Mountain View campground at Scofield Reservoir in central Utah. It's sponsored by the Division of Wildlife Resources' Becoming an Outdoors Woman program.

"Participants will learn to interpret a map, identify compass types and parts, find a bearing using a compass and determine distances," says RaLynne Takeda, Becoming an Outdoors Woman coordinator for the DWR. "They'll have a lot of fun while learning an important outdoor skill."

The camp-out is limited to 15 participants. Women must register for it no later than Sept. 1 by calling Takeda at (801) 538-4710. The cost to participate is $50. That fee covers food and all the equipment needed except sleeping bags and sleeping pads, which participants must supply.
