Well, here we are in lovely Las Vegas... gearing up for the first day of SHOT activities.
Today we're off to the range to play with all the new "toys". We'll start with Winchester/Browning and affiliated companies, then roll on to see who else has goodies to play with. Smith and Wesson will be displaying their wares, and if we can make it over there, Remington and Co will be showing off their new offerings as well.
Stay tuned for pix and stories as the weekend unfolds! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-faces-toast-beers.gif
Hope their is some good news for the non-lead bullets.

Cool, cant wait to hear some reports and see some photos from the show.
If you or anyone else gets a chance, try to see if there are any new trail cam break throughs. Last year Moultrie announced a lot of new products at SHOT.

The fine folks at Browning and Winchester said to be sure to stop by their booth tomorrow as they will unveil some new products not yet seen at the shoot today. Speckmisser was seen trying out some of the A-Bolt magnums and one of the safari O/U Double Rifles. I think we all had fun with the Springfield line of pistols. The S&W shoot out was a real blast so to speak, the 44 mag from the pro shop was a real shooter. One of my favorite hunting rounds and a pleasure to shoot made even more fun by the Crimsion Trace grips it was fitted with. More to follow , lots to see and people to talk to.
Stay tuned for more from the 08 SHOT Show.

If any of you guys get to the S&W booth and meet Tom S., tell him his son says hello. I am jealous, wish I could be there.

Here are a few photos from the weekend so far!
First day daze... even after six years of attendance, the first view of the show floor can make my head spin.

My brother, Scott, came out for his first visit. A kid in a candy store... a trite but appropriate cliche to describe the look on his face as he got to put his hands on this Marlin slug gun.

After a day of checking out the best the industry has to offer, we got a chance to relax a bit at the SHOT Industry Gala event.
Here's part of the JHO ProStaff gang at dinner. Left to Right, Brad Swadley, Holly Heyser, and Bryce Mann.

Featured entertainment for the evening was Randy Travis. The cool thing about this event is that you can walk right up to the stage and enjoy a close-up view of the performance.

Lots of folks decided to do a little dancing as well! Here's one couple cutting a rug. Notice the Texas Divas hat...a large contingent of these great ladies were on hand to brighten the scene.

Many more pictures to come... and some more informative stuff too.

I'm slumming in the press room right now. Just finished videoing the DockDogs Rapid Retrieve competition. It's windy and spitting rain outside so it was a problem for the camera folks. I got tp meet Andy the lab and his trainers from Bakersfield.
I'll get some video up tonight. Jim Shockey was kind enough to say a few words this morning and I have Andy Moe and Tim Mancillas from Aguila Ammo talking about their new 5mm ammo.
The Predator trail camera folks showed me their IR cams. Mountain House showed us their new desert menu for this year. I'm heading back to Flambeau's booth to see about their UV paint on their waterfowl decoys.

Thanks for trying, I am sure he is pretty busy, just like everyone else at the show. I can't wait to see the new o/u also, I hear they are supposed to be pretty awesome. I know I really liked the side by side I saw, so I would expect the same for the new o/u. Have fun out there.

Well I just got back from Las Vegas. Being one of the newbies, it was almost overwhelming, but with the old hands guidance I made it through. I saw tons of products, and have lots to write about. So now the sorting starts. I did try and make sure my handwriting was legible though, LOL!
Anyway, the SHOT Show is a great event. I met alot of great folks and saw lots of great product. On the final flight home, I got to chat briefly with Todd and Tia from TnT Outdoor Adventures, who are from the DFW area. Todd was filling me in on their Africa trip and some of the other hunting that was going on. He mentioned in an upcoming show in the third quarter that Tia takes a super 54" Kudu while stalking. I shared with them briefly some of my experiences while in Africa. A couple of really nice people, it was a pleasure to get to talk to them both. Check them out on the Sportsman Channel if you get a chance.
For now, this tired fella is headed to bed. I haven't done that much walking in a long time, so it definitely wore me out.

Hope their is some good news for the non-lead bullets.
Define "good news". Here are some highlights from the weekend's notes.
The bad news is, there aren't going to be any economical options in the foreseeable future. Everything coming down the pike is priced about 5-10% higher than other premium ammo, and in many cases is almost double the cost of standard loads (e.g. Core-lokt and PowerPoints).
The good news is that all of the big-three ammo makers are now loading lead-free bullets. Several of the smaller companies, like Cor-Bon, Black Hills Gold, and Sellier&Belloit are also taking the step.
You've already heard about the Winchester/Nosler ETip. Unfortunately, it's only going to be available in .30 caliber for the near future, although I've been told to expect a 7mm and likely a .270 before the year is out.
Nosler is also now selling the ETip bullets, so reloaders can roll their own. As with the Winchester loaded ammunition, the Nosler offering is currently only available in .30cal, but that is about to change.
Federal, it's no news to say, is loading the Barnes bullets. Likewise, Cor-Bon and Black Hills are also using Barnes.
Remington has gone a slightly different direction, and is loading the Lapua Naturalis bullets in their new, "Green" line. These bullets have actually been around a little while now, and are available in a moderate range of calibers.
Environ-Metal, the folks who brought us Hevi-Shot are working on a bullet to be released in the very near future as well. I was, unfortunately, unable to chat with the owner for more details, but hope to get with him in a follow-up conversation soon.
Extreme Shock has had a lead free offering for a little while, and is now expanding that offering to include some shotgun slugs as well as handgun rounds.
And, then there's the CCI TNT Green... the .22mag ammo. The bright side is that at least there'll be something to shoot at ground squirrels after June 30. The downside is that it's probably gonna cost in the neighborhood of $9/box! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/afraid_face.gif
More to come on this.

Well.....I was hoping for something in 22lr.
At least it's good to hear some are working on "Lead-free"....I wish Hornady would start some "Lead free" bullets.
