well guys im not much of a novelist, but here we go,got hooked up with richard [richardoutwest]
last year thru this site, did my research and talked with a few people that had hunted with him
including a few from this site, ive always wanted to hunt a coues buck, what better place to do it
than arizona, after speaking with richard, this was a no brainer, the dude handles everything
from start to finish,he will put you in for the very best units with the best possibility of
being drawn, he will then have several areas picked out upon your arrival with bucks
already scouted out for you.keep in mind this is public land hunting!! forest and blm land.
you better have your A game ready to go when you arrive, richard and the crew obviously do!!
I arrive thursday night to a motel arleady set up for me with key waiting, keep in mind
i just got back from wyoming in a wall tent for 5 days in the snow and wind!! what a treat
this was to have a room!!richard meets me that evening and we go over the game plan for the morning
as friday is opening day.after FEASTING at richards place that evening,[thank you april for your wonderful
cooking and hospitality}i awake to a 3 am alarm, the boys show up to get me. richard, robert and mackey.
we head to our area, go over the game plan once again, robert and myself strap the packs on and start
our uphill climb, he says we need to be in positon by sun up to head off some bucks they have been seeing
crossing a particular saddle in route to there bedding area. richard and mack would stay down below to
spot for bucks and give us a heads up as to where the grey ghosts may be if we could not find them,
did i mention that robert and i had to hike UPHILL , early bird gets the worm guys, and you gotta go where the bucks are!!after a couple hour hike UPHILL, we get into position,i no sooner take of my back pack than i hear richard say
ive got a couple of small bucks down hear heading out the other way, robert and i are are still catching
our breaths when a few minutes later we here theres a good one heading toward the saddle!! no rest
for us!! we still have another 75 yds or so to get where we could get a clear view of the saddle where
we were hoping he would cross, did i mention this is UPHILL with every type of cactus you can imagine!!
we scramble up the few remaing yards and just like it was written here comes a beauty of a buck
crossing over the skyline into the canyon were he would bed for the day, robert looks at him and
says"he,s a good buck"its the first morning of your hunt ,its up to you.my reply was, robert
whats the range on that deer? he pulls out the lieca, and says 321 yds, i say robert , dead buck brother!!
i learned a long time a go from my hero and mentor bob foulkrod, "never pass a buck up on the first
day your willing to shoot on the last day" i chamber a round in my 257 wby mag and extend the legs
on my harris bipod, get into my favorite shooting position which is sitting with knees up, nussle into
the stalk of my vanguard and get him into crosshairs, i am at 9 power with my kahles 3 to 9 with a 42 mm
obj. dudes, these deer are tiny man, he looked like an ant in the duplex reticle!!i tell robert, im ready
to make it happen, he,s says soon as he stops bust him!!the deer is walking at a fast pace trying to beat the hot sun to hit his favorite nap spot for the day, he stops quateriing toward me for a last bite of cactus before
retiring for the day,at that point i barked one off out of the 257 wby mag and sent a 120 nosler partion on its way,
at report or the rifle, there was the undeniable sound of the infamous "thudd" and then the reply of
my man robert, "dead deer bro"!!! at that point the shakes started with the realization that a dream
i had had since i was kid of harvesting one of these"grey ghosts" had finally come true!
this is a real hunt boys, on public land with some competition out there. richard, robert and mackey
definetly know there buisness!! i cannot recommend them highly enough for anyone wanting
to hunt arizona for any species they may be after, i wanted a coues buck and i got it! they guide
for any thing arizona has to offer, these guys will show you game, feed you very, very well
and most importantly show you a GREAT TIME!! this hunt was one of my best hunts of all time
and think its because of the people i shared it with! THANK YOU ! RICHARD, ROBERT &MACKEY.
