Anyone know how axis antlers work? I know basically anything over 30" in length is a pretty good "trophy". But what else does one look at? It seems like the middle tine (some call it the "seconds") can vary from just a nub, to almost as long as the main beam. Good mass, width, and tine length seems obvious for a nice axis, but do they have droptines? can they be 4x4? have split tines? My curiosity snuck up on me so I thought I'd ask.

Here's a great photo Speckmisser took on our last JHO exotic hunt. We shot the doe that this big buck was interested in. He was pizzed and didnt seem ready to leave when we tried to retrieve the doe.

Btw, here is a nice gallery of axis I came across while searching.

yes anyhting over 30 is a trophy. 4X4's are very rare along with kickers or nontypical points. if you want a high scoring axis they must have long fronts points like 10 or 12 inchs and logn back tines about that same length. i'm guessing that one pictured is 27 maybe 28 tops but he has short points.

Glasseye, nobody wanted to spend the dinero for a big buck on that trip. Most of us were there to shoot does.

We tried our best to get my little brother to shoot it, but he was skeered of what would happen when mama saw the credit card statement. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-chainsaw-left.gif

I don't have any photos readily available but I have seen axis deer with extra points. I've seen one or two drop tines coming off the main beam near the cottle tines and a few that have a total of 3 or 4 brow tines. I've also seen one that have very broad, almost flattened palmations on the upper portions of the main beam. They sure are a cool animal.

from a quick google search

In the fish and game office on Lanai there is a glass cabinet with artifacts that have been found on the island. One item I wish that I had taken a picture of and took measurements of was a shed axis antler. The only thing left was the base, it had been gnawed down by rats. The base looked like an elk antler base.
Next time I go there I'll take pics.

I picked up a pretty good 4-point shed while horseback riding in Maui. I gave it to the young lady who was wrangling for us.

At the time, I didn't realize how exceptional it was.

Mostly they are all 3x3. Most common non-typical points are right above the browtines. Referred to as devil points on elk.
Along with length of main beam look for a good spread and long brows and seconds.

Not a very good pic, but this is a 33 1/2" buck I got in TX.

3x3 is the typical Axis antlers. Recently shot an 11 point one. He had the typical 3x3 with 5 extra one inch points between the eye guards and the main beam.

Take care

My Axis I have on the wall is an eight pointer, but technically it's still a six pointer. The extra points have to account for 10% of the total score for them to be able to be considered actual points.

I still call it an eight pointer though. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-devil.gif
