So I'm doing my homeowork for an upcoming buffalo hunt and was hoping someone might have some pictures or a website showing the diagrams of the vitals of a bison. Did a google search but nothing worth while came up. Thanks for the info. if you have it.

Thanks for the post. Something I had heard was that the best place to put a heavy bullet on this beast was where the neck meets the skull (The AT -atlas) but when I see pictures of the huge head on the buffalo its hard to pick that spot. Anyone have any other illustrations or advice?
I haven't decided yet on arrow or bullet as the choice is mine. I guess it all depends on how close I can get.

Here's a view showing how low the spine runs. I shot it behind the ear.

Shane thanks for the picture. Was it easy to see the area behind the ear where you aimed? Did he drop on the spot or was a followup shot needed? I realize that through the lungs will cause death I just want it to be as fast as possible for a nice clean kill. If you don't mind Shane share the story with us about this buffalo hunt. What rifle and bullet did you shoot him with?

Saw these pictures of the skull and it sure looks very thick and the brain looks pretty well protected by the horns. Second link is to a closer view of the head of a nice bull.

This was a private ranch, meat harvest in MT. 1400 lb cow. Ranch rules require the spine/skull shot. I went for the spine so I didn't bust up the skull. I used the same load I use for deer/elk. Browning A-bolt SS in 300 Win Mag. 165 grn Winchester FailSafe ammo. Yeah, breaking the spine drops them instantly. The ranch foreman uses a 223 AR.
If I were to hunt free-range, trophy bull, I'd go for the broadside shoulder shot as well.

You need to use good bullets like Nosler Partitions( I used 180gr Sierra Game Kings in my Sako 300wm which penetrated the hide but no further they were found in the ribs I finally got a round in under the rib cage into the vitals & dropped it).I was told on my Bison Hunt I could expect from 400 to 800 pounds of meat from a mature bull. The one I shot was 7 years old, they're known as Burger Bulls so you get lots of burger and not many roasts. The meat had a strong odor and a very strong taste that wasn't easy to mask.I'd never shoot a mature breeder again it would either be a dry cow or a 2 1/2 year old bull for better quality meat, just my opinion.

Didn't get much sleep last night as I kept thinking about my scheduled buffalo hunt today. After getting within 60 yards and confident killing distance of my muzzle loader I let the hammer fall. So did the cow in the picture which is my only buffalo to date. Maybe now I can go to sleep and dream of my hunt tonight.http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c333/Lives2hunt/Smilingaboutbuffalo.jpg

In the head. I can post a picture of her skull without the skin showing the entrance if anyone wants to see it. It put her down for the count. Just had some smoked BBQ buffalow ribs yesterday. There is so much meat on those ribs just a single one makes a big meal. I'm finding that I keep giving more & more of it away because so many people want to try it or they want to try some. Glad there is so much of it, ha.
