Gunsite "Schools" Sheriff Jim Wilson Recounts Defensive Pistol Class at Gunsite Academy
8/28/07
Peoria, IL--In the October issue of Shooting Times, Sheriff Jim Wilson recounts his recent defensive pistol class at Gunsite Academy. Handgun training has come a long way from the days when police shot primarily at bullseye-style targets from a standing position. Bad habits such as putting your empties in your coat pocket were unintentionally trained into young recruits, and civilians were pretty much left with few places to turn for instruction.
Today, all that has changed. Realistic training and practice are the norm. Instructors work out real-world shooting scenarios and how to solve them to your advantage and have come up with modern training that is important and available to both civilians and law enforcement.
"Having dealt with real bad guys in rough desert terrain and dark houses, I have to say that [Gunsite's] simulators are extremely realistic and challenging," says Wilson. "Gunsite's mind-set lecture also gives students ways to deal with their fears and ways to develop a successful plan to deal with a criminal attack," Wilson continues.
