I have a southern Utah general buck tag for this season (2001). I need some info from anyone who has hunted this tag before. The season is during the last two weeks of October. I am also may be looking for someone to hunt with if there is anyone interested. I am planning on hunting around Panguitch lake or Navajo lake, which is up the mountain from Cedar city. Access to a ranch near Navajo lake fell through for me, so I am working on plan B. Can anyone help me!!!

I have never personally hunted the area you're refering to. But I have hunted several seasons a bit futher north in the southern region around the Richfield/Salina area. You may want to consider checking the area called "Pahvant" at the northern most point in the southern region. It's easy to locate and can be accessed from Richfield, Salina or Fillmore. If you decide to go there be sure to get some topo's.

The "Pahvant" has been real productive for us in the past. We always camp and hunt the top of the range except for one year when bad weather kept us from getting up there.

Feel free to e-mail with specific questions if you're interested in this area.

whitehunter,

I used to hunt in the Dixie NF just west of Escalante. There are several roads that lead north from Hwy 12 up to Barney Top ###Mountain. With some weather up top the deer will be pushed down to the lower elevations. We usually saw 40 to 50 deer a day with about 10 being bucks. Biggest bucks were in the 24 to 26" range with an occasional 28".

There are some elk in this area so you have to be careful not to spook them out. The pressure was about average for Utah, lots of road hunters as usual.

South of Hwy 12 is more Dixie NF land you can hunt. Not as many deer but it seemed the bigger ###bucks hung out there more.

My buddy Fubar jinxed me this year and we didn't get our Utah general tag. Next year we're going I hope. Keep us posted how you do and take a bunch of pics to show us your hunt.

Whitehunter,
### I have hunted that area several times over the past ten years. I got a nice 4 x 4 just east of the lake. We will be back there again this year, e-mail me and we can go over some some spots to look at maybe we can meet up out there and point you in the right direction.
