Anyone heard much about the new .308 Marlin ? It was designed to shoot in the the new Marlin XLR with Lever Evolution ammo. It is supposed to compete with the .308 Winchester.

I saw the round and the new Marlin 336 that's gonna shoot it at the SHOT Show last week. It does look promising if you want a 336 that shoots (reportedly) 300 yards. Personally, if I have to shoot that far I want to stick with a good bolt action, or at least rely on my Browning BLR. But hey, the 336 might be able to do it.
Check out Jim Matthews' response to this and some of the other new stuff in the SHOT Show 2007 thread, above. (http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=131769)

The "marlinowners.com" forum has beat this topic to death over the past few months, so there should be some good info over there. Also, "levergunlovers.com" has a similar thread discussing it. Grab a beer, sit back, and enjoy...some of the stuff gets pretty animated.
It sounds like a nice combination to me, but I won't be getting one. I'm in the "leverguns don't wear scopes" crowd, so I wouldn't really be able to take advantage of the extra range.

The 307 Winchester was the same in principle: a rimmed 308. We all know how popular that was.~AMMOe

SpeckM,
The .307 Winchester and the Big Bore .375 Winchester both were introduced by Winchester in their beefed up Big Bore '94 Lever Rifle way back in the late 1970's. The .307 Win. was a high velocity lever round but with a flat tipped bullet nose to prevent chain reaction spontaneous tubular magazine explosion upon the recoil of the lever rifle. Because of this flat tipped bullet nose, the high velocity round was limited to around 200-225 yds. effective range with a 150 grain bullet. The Big Bore .375 Win. was a real brush buster at close range. Both these unpopular cartridges were discontinued(including the beefed up Big Bore '94 rifle) in the early 1980's. They are now probably only a handloader's proposition. If the Hornady soft plastic tip were available to Winchester back in the late 1970's when the .307 Win. was introduced, it might have survived a little longer in the crowded high velocity marketplace. 'Nuff said.

For the lever lover that reluctantly goes hunting in certain areas with a bolt rifle (because he may need the extra range) I think the .308 ME will be a most welcome addition to his gun safe. If the guy already has a 30-30 and shoots the new Hornady ammo he can get similar ballistics but maybe not the accuracy as the new rifle/cartridge combo-I think and hope it does well.
I do know that if I were looking for a 30 cal. lever rifle it would be that new .308ME, fine ballistics and in a gorgeous rifle.
