Sent off for my C&R Monday.......hope it wont be too long until it gets here. But I will be picking up a 91/30 at a local gunshow tomorrow....if I can find a decent one....to tide me over until the license get here.

My question is......and I hope its not considered a sacriledge(sp?) here on the forum.....but Im wanting to update(Sporterize) at least one milsurp. What kind of shooter can I expect out of a 91/30 with a Sporter synthetic stock? Can they be bedded and floated.....would that help any? Im just looking to get something to practice some long range shooting with(300-500yds).....cant afford a new rifle. I could get the work done on the stock/action cheap as a fellow church member is a gunsmith.

I think you would be much better off getting a mauser action for sporterizing. Although German Mausers are the most sought after the Turkish, Yugo and or Mausers from other countries work just fine. I believe the Mauser actions will result in a more accurate rifle. The Swiss K-31 is an extrremely accurate firearm if you like the straight pull bolt.

I agree with Val, Mausers are the way to go. I've built many Mausers over the years. They have a vast array of aftermarket parts and accessories places like here: http://www.sporterexpress.com/v2/

If you go with Mosin Nagant, you may be able to put a nice stock on it, but you're stuck with the 7.62 Russian caliber, while with a Mauser, you can rebarrel to anything from 22/250 through 35 Whelen, including all the standard calibers like .243, .270, .308, 30-06, etc. The mosin has a lousy trigger, an extremely primitive safety, and they're just in general not very accurate. The Finn M39s are better but are a LOT more $$$.
