I'm a fan of the 06 and all of its offspring. The 270, 25-06, 280, and 35 Whelen are the best known. There are more wildcats built on this case than I even know about.
If you take a look at the 50 BMG it is nothing more than a giant 06. The case appears to have been proportionately expanded.
With the exception of the 30-30 I believe that more big game has been taken with the 06 on this continent than any other cartridge.
If I were limited to only one rifle it would be a 30-06.

I celebrated my Model 70 Winchester .30-06 yesterday by taking this nice 2x3 sitka blacktail. He was still tending a doe! rifle not shown.

Any day is a good day for an armed hike - but it's especially good when sporting your favorite rifle and valid tags in your pocket.

I plan to further celebrate this weekend by having my wife take her first deer with the same rifle...

Hoback...

Congrats on the sitka! Sounds like you're shooting the same rifle I've used for 30+ years. Still as good as ever. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/thumbs-up-ani.gif

Rem 700 BDL .30-06

That's what I shoot for;

Ground squirrels, Varmints, Deer, Hogs

And that's what I will use when I get to hunt;

Kudu, Dall Sheep, Ibex, Moose, Elk

My step-dad gave it to me when I was 18. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

I celebrated the only way I knew how... bought a new 30-06.

Finally bought my first lefty, no more reaching over.

CDL, nice piece of wood. Leupold 3X9 LR reticle.
