In the spirit of Christmas giving I managed to give myself a nice Christmas present this year, a Marlin 336 SC model. I haven't looked up the serial number as to date of manufacture but it's got 6 groove rifling and a 2/3 magazine. This gun was residing in a pawn shop in Billings when I found it looking dry and lonely. The owner made me a bargain price that I couldn't refuse so I took it home. After a few drops of good gun oil rubbed into the metal, and some good wood oil rubbed into the wood (which removed a few decades of grime) I now have a pretty sharp looking rifle. It seems to be all there but for the front sight hood and the metal is about 85%. The wood is really superb. I think this rifle spent more time in a case than in the field. I will be using this gun to toss cast bullets at rabbits this winter. Should be a gas. ~AMMOe

I just got off a long stretch of work nights and my first piece of relaxation was to check the production date of that Marlin "SC" carbine. It's not that old -in fact, it's not that old at all. It was made in 1954. That makes it only a little older than me.

Not old at all, really....

...really.

(sigh)

Aahhh....ain't Christmas great!! I just put a (new to me) 1971 Winchester 94 in 44 mag in the safe, as well as a Wild West Guns Co-Pilot that I picked up used.

AMMOe. Congrats on the new rifle...enjoy. I enjoy chasing/shooting jacks with my 30-30 as well. Great fun and good practice. I'm always looking for the two-in-one opportunity, but haven't got it yet.

scr83jp - I am interested to know how the XLR shoots. I've had my eye on one of those since they came out. I'm really hoping Marlin will do the XLRs in a takedown someday, so I'm kind of waithing to see....I'll probably be waiting a long, long time.

Christmas Update! My son got a 45-70 Marlin "Cowboy" rifle from Santa Claus. Woke up Christmas morning and there it was, nestled in next to his stocking which was filled with UP Brass and some cast bullets! He also got a 500 v-max bullets for his CZ 22 Hornet! He must have been VERY good last year! ~AMMOe

(Santa isn't very PC in my house. My daughter got a Anschutz 22WMR and a Beretta 21A in her stocking...)

71Fan: I loaded some 158 grain lead GC bullets over some Unique this morning for the Marlin. Rabbits beware!~AMMOe

71 Fan I'm waiting for some lever revolution ammo, dealers are sold out. I need a scope base and rings then I'll try it out. When I unpacked it I noticed some base shims were included along with a safety lock and hammer spur.

scr83jp: if you are having a hard time finding leverevolution, try checking GunBroker every few days. There is usually someone selling Leverevolution ammo, just be careful of the shipping costs...sometimes they get you good. I just looked, and there is nothing right now, but this just ended yesterday with no takers: http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=63309049
Also, this seller lists a phone number, maybe you can just call them and order some.

Good luck and keep us posted!

(Stifled cry of anguish)

RELOAD! RELOAD! RELOAD!

It's one of the greatest calibers to reload for that there is! ~AMMOe

(A .457" round ball pushed into a belled case mouth over 10 grains of Unique! What a rabbit banger!)

Business owner with 1 and 4 year old sons = factory ammo http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-crying-blue.gif

It's all I can do to load a few rounds of 348 each year.

Too bad! You could get a 45-70 Lee Loader and keep it in your desk at work for Lunch hour! I've been there and done that, myself, and it worked out well. In the space of a couple of weeks I'd get 40 rounds loaded during the odd minutes of my days. Hope you get freed up enough to give it a whirl sometime. 45 - 2 1/10" is cool round to reload for! ~AMMOe

Nowadays the spare minutes at work are spent reading and posting on shooting and hunting forums. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-hitting-self.gif
