PICKS OF THE WEEK
1. Jess Ranch Lakes in Hesperia earns the number one pick this week for being so consistently good on trout with a decent number of fish from 5-0 to 8-0. Good anglers are limiting each trip to this High Desert lake. There is a trout hatchery on site, and the lakes are stock with rainbows and steelhead every Friday. The lakes complex is only open Friday through Sunday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information or directions call 760-240-1107 or visit the new, developing web site at www.jessranchlakesnews.com (http://www.jessranchlakesnews.com/).
2. Lake Skinner is still one of the top three picks of the week. It continues to have a very good striped bass bite with a lot of fish showing on small swimbaits and frozen shad (if you can get it). Most of the fish are under 4-0, but there have been a pile of 8- to 10-pounders caught over the past couple of weeks, and the big fish this past week was a 22-pounder. For an update, check with the lake staff at 951-926-1505.
3. The big trout continue to show from the Buena Vista Lakes (near Taft in the south end of the San Joaquin Valley) and there were a bunch more fish over 10-0 this week. These are the same big Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows planted throughout Southern California, and this lake gets far less pressure than many other waters. For information, call the lake concession at 661-763-1268 or Bob's Bait in Bakersfield at 661-833-8657.
FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS
TROUT: Lots of good trout action right now. For big trout, the top bets continue to be Santa Ana River Lakes, which produced 12 rainbows over 15 pounds, and Corona Lake, which had five 19-plus rainbows this past week, and Buena Vista Lakes near Taft, which is still cranking out a few fish over 10 pounds each week. Jess Ranch Lakes in Hesperia is excellent for limits with fish to 8-0, and the same can be said for the Orange County waters of Irvine Lake and Laguna Niguel Park Lake. Another desert water, Hesperia Lake, and Angler's Lake in Hemet also have a good bites. There is decent action on recent plants and holdover fish at Diamond Valley, Piru, Cachuma, and Pyramid Lake. Virtually all of the urban lakes from San Diego County north into Los Angeles County are now being planted with trout, and the bites are good across the board at these places -- at least for the first couple of days after the plants. Top picks here would be Wohlford (big first plant of season this week), Dixon, Poway, Jennings, and Cuyamaca in San Diego County, along with San Bernardino County park lakes, Yucaipa, Glen Helen, Cucamonga-Guasti, and Mojave Narrows.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: Bass action is slowing fast with the cooler weather, but the increase in trout plants is bringing a few big fish up to eat the rainbows. There has also been a decent deep water bite on jigs, ice jigs, plastics, and crawdads developing at many of the bigger reservoirs. While no bites are wide open, top picks include Casitas, Piru, Pyramid, El Capitan, Perris, and Diamond Valley. Other decent bets include Castaic and Silverwood. The lower Kern River is also decent for smallmouth.
STRIPED BASS: For Southern California waters, Skinner is the top pick with fish to 22-0 this week on swimbaits and shad, but Pyramid, Silverwood and Castaic have a consistent bites on smaller fish, mostly on cut baits. A few bigger fish are showing on trout-like swimbaits or big cranks. On the Colorado River, Willow Beach continues to have an on-and-off bite on stripers to 20-0 or more. This past week the bite was on again. Lake Mead's bass have sounded with some fish on spoons off Sand Island, while Mohave and Havasu are both fair to good on small fish to 4-0, mostly near the dams.
PANFISH: Most of the panfish bites have gone south. There are still a smattering of bluegill showing at Perris, Diamond Valley, Skinner, Piru, Pyramid, Lopez, and Santa Margarita, but the action is tough. Some redear are showing at Cachuma. There are also crappie bites of note at El Capitan and the Buena Vista Lakes, both waters producing some quality fish.
CATFISH: Casitas and San Vicente have produced a handful of quality cats, but the bite is tough. The Colorado River has had a better general bite and a few big flatheads over 15-0 continue to show. Hesperia Lake is also still cranking out a few bigger catfish each week thanks to ongoing weekly plants.
SAN BERNARDINO MOUNTAIN WATERS
SILVERWOOD: Still an excellent trout bite on Power Bait and nightcrawlers off the docks or off shore. Sandra Kemper, Newport Beach, landed a 7-8 trout on Power Bait off the dock. The catfish bite is good, in spite of the cool weather, with the bite best at the dam and in Cleghorn on anchovies and or chicken livers. Lots of limits. Chase Morgan, Anaheim, landed a 12-0 catfish on anchovies off shore. Striper bite good on swimbaits and Kastmasters. Largemouth to 3-0 are good, also showing on swimbaits off the dock and by the dam. Bluegill and carp slow to fair from shores in most coves. Crappie bite good on Lip Ripperz plastics. Philip Ebert, Riverside, caught a 1/2-pound crappie on yellow and white Lip Ripperz. Information: marina 760-389-2299, state park 760-389-2281, Silverwood Country store 760-389-2423.

HIGH DESERT LAKES
HESPERIA LAKE: Still a good trout bite with plenty of fish over 5-0. Best action has been on Lip Ripperz plastics, jigs, or Power Bait, and dousing all with scent seems to help. Each person who lands a trout 5-0 or bigger will be eligible to enter a drawing to win a rod and reel valued at $200. Coming the end of March: sturgeon. Fish over 100 pounds and perhaps up to 175 pounds -- the biggest fish ever planted in fresh water in Southern California -- will come to Hesperia Lake. Information: 800-521-6332 or 760-244-5951.

Most trout are over 2-0 and the best bite is from the northern, southern and eastern shore of lake 2 and the grassy point and western shore from the bridge to the pump house of lake 3. Augie Castro, Fontana, landed an 8-12 steelhead on a white Roostertail. Fred Winterswyk, Rancho Cucamonga, and Kirk Brown, Riverside, caught 7-5 and 6-1 trout to top off a 39-12 stringer, all on Jakes. Gil Rowe, Victorville, caught 6-8 and 4-8 trout on Power worms.
