I'm a yung'un so I like more modern stuff. Allways liked Silverado and Tombstone. Watch'em every chance I get. I shoot BP Gunfighter so I like the scene where Kevin Costner shoots two guys outside the saloon, GF style.

All good choices. I watch Tombstone every time it is on also. Three Godfathers! Haven't thought of that one in a while - another good John Wayne film. Unforgiven, great movie, gritty, probably captures the West as well as any film. Hombre with Paul Newman is another good one.

Open Range with Costner and Duvall. One handgunning glitch (13 shots from a Colt SAA) but the rest was very realistic.~AMMOe

Jack Bull comes to mind. John Cusack isn't the guy who looks like he could star in a western but he played the part real well, good story.

All time best IMHO is Outlaw Josie Wales...."Dying aint much of a living"...god I love that line in the movie. Also the Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean with Paul Newman. Pale Rider and Unforgiven are great. Great topic starter! http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley_10sign.gif

Outlaw Josie Wales is now but growing up my favorite was "The Cowboys" with John Wayne. I wanted to be able to leave home and work a drive like that so much when I was a kid, The whiskey scene is great too.

All the westerns listed are good choices. I did not like "The Cowboys" when I saw it as a kid because it is one of the three movies that I know of where the Duke was killed. He also died in "The Shootist", and that was a good movie also. "Silverado" was a great movie, and still enjoyable every time I see it. Why don't they make another movie as good as that one for us western fans?

Once upon a time in the West-

Charles Bronson to the three bad guys. "Did you bring a horse for me?

Bad guy- "Looks like we're shy one horse." followed by laughter.

Charles Bronson- "No. You brought two too many" followed briefly by silence and the BANG! POW! BING! PTOW! After the smoke cleared, Bronson had a flesh wound and there were two too many horses:-)

Anything filmed in TECHNICOLOR OR PANAVISION. The colors where so much better in the 60s and early 70s. You could feel the heat coming off the prairie. And you could actually see whats going on in the scene, dust coming up from a horses hoofs, other actors in the background, made you feel like you were right there.

One of the best westerns ever made was called "The Long Riders"
It Had great action, very good special effects.
It was about the James gang and had 4 sets of actual brothers in it to represent the James,Youngers and Fords. I recommend it.

hntnnut, your right on...... it's skin griz. The other thing I really liked from that movie was the note hatchet Jake left. I think it went something about being of sound mind and broke legs. then about his rifle, I believe a 50 cal hawkin, that Kilt the bear that kilt him and that he hoped whoever found him was a whiteman. I love that movie.

The other one I can watch over and over is Josie......you gunna pull them pistols or whistle dixie.

Lonesome Dove because it's probably how it really was. Open Range for the 18 minute shootout. Unforgiven because it's Clint and True Grit because John Wayne is the King of the Cowboys.

"Missouri Breaks" Jack Nicholson Marlin Brando[/b] Was wondering if that was gonna be tossed in.

"You know what woke you up? You just had your throat cut."

For laughs I would enthusiastically add Rustler's Rhapsody with Tom Berenger, Patrick Wayne, and Andy Griffith. It doesn't hold a candle to Blazing Saddles (nothing does) but it is a better parody of the western.

"For some reason, the bad guy was always a Colonel who had a beautiful daughter and about a thousand head of cattle which you would hear but never see. "

Man, got to head over to Netflix and add to the que.

Can't argue with any of the old ones you all have listed. The Searchers is high on the list, but I gotta go with Red River.

My favorite line is from Big Jake when The Duke and Sam the Indian are talking about going to Montana to shoot "elk as big as buffalo". Sam says "I wish they were buffalo" and John Wayne says THINGS CHANGE.

Not a western mind you. But undoubtedly one of the best shootouts ever filmed. They could only film on Sunday mornings, and used over 400 rounds of blank ammo PER TAKE! There were some screw ups. If you notice when DeNiro starts shooting inside the car, the rear view mirror falls off twice, (bad editing). Also when the Lincoln rear ends the stopped car the air bags don't deploy. If you watch Tom Sizemore, he falls into a fountain, and in the next scene when he gets up, he's completely dry. Check out Val Kilmer's magazine change. Pretty slick. Bill T.

Haven't any of you youngsters seen "The Sackets"? That was a classic that had both Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot as two of the three brothers. After that there was a sequel featuring Sam Elliot titled "The Quick and the Dead" which was way better than the movie with the same title made much later and was just about street duels. I think I still have The Sackets on VHS, gonna have to dig it up again.

Open range and high Noon, and lonesome dove and just Brad Pit's Jessie James. Awesome. Really Awesome. The Aflic kid was just great. I think he should have won the best actors award. Didnt like No country all that much. Of course it was Tommy Lee Jones, but the movie wasnt all that great.
