So now that I have my MEC setup I need to go buy powder, primers, etc. ###Having never done this before I need to ask a few questions, excuse my ignorance.
I'll be loading AA hulls since they're all over the place. ###Was wondering what powders you use and why. ###I was fixed on Clays then saw Red Dot as giving what I want, now I'm just plain overwhelmed. ###Also do different primers have a significantly different effect?
I prefer higher velocities and less shot. ###This seems to correlate to higher chamber pressures. ###Can high pressures wear out a gun?
I know it's going to be trial and error 'til I get something that both my gun and I like, but if you have anything to help steer me, I am all ears. ###
I know it's not rocket science, maybe I should just get on with it?

I really can't answer your ? compleat, like what type of gun do you have what gauge?
First of all I would buy the Lyman shotshell reloading book this will give you a TON of loads to try second I would only buy 1lb of powder to start with third when looking for a new load I look at pressure to decide what powder & wads i'm going to try, and yes primers do effect pressure with some being hotter then others, I beleive the Hodgons site has a listing of primers and where they fall as far as heat range.
I'm going to assume your shooting a 12ga and want some 7/8 or 1 oz. loads so you may want to take a look at Green Dot it will do same as RD with less PSI ###you may also take a look at IMR700X my favorite light load powder, one of the things that I like about it, less powder for same speed = more reloads per lb. and is clean burning. and I also have 12lb left out of a 16lb keg that I bought for about $50.

Huntducks,
Weatherby O/U, 12 GA. ###I want to have a load that I can use for trap, skeet, sporting clays, dove and quail. ###Right, 7/8 or 1 oz. ###I have the Lyman manual, there's so much data there, I posted here trying to narrow down. Thanks, ....

I have used this load many many times 23.0gr GD Win 209 primer Rem. RXP12 wad 1OZ of shot 1325fps I load these for everything except sporting clays there I use 1-1/8oz
I also load 700X 19.0grs with a Precision 1 wad ( I don't think they makes these anymore) right at 1300fps.
I try to keep most of my reloads at 1250-1300fps.

JR,
Most powder mfg.'s have a re-loading booklet listing many loads using their powders and a variety of different components.
These booklets should be available and free where you purchase your powder.
Whatever you do - follow the suggested "formula" in the booklet and DO NOT substitute the listed components. ###You can cause serious harm to yourself and your shotgun. All the loads in these booklets have been tested for correct pressures.
Re-loading can be fun and cost saving with a zillion loads to choose from.
Just be safe and have fun........
