I own both and don't rate them in the same strength catagory. (As do many other sources) My favorite load is 45 grains of H-4831. It is not a fast load but it shoots really well. In the Siamese I like H-4895 powder for the hot loads. How hot you can load it will depend on your bullet alloy. I think I used to shoot a 300 grain RCBS GC design over 52 grains of H-4895. It shot well and brass lasted quite a while. I'd get a good manual if I were you and start with what ever they recommend.
45-70 Siamese Mausers conversions are fairly scarce. How did you come by yours? I now have two, the last being purchased a few weeks ago from a buddy. My other Siam has killed a lot of game! ~AMMOe

I use my custom marlin 1895 gun mostly for bear over bait and have been using 405 and 320 gr hard cast bullets with 44 and 47 gr of R7--shoots well- am thinking of going to fn bullet in 350 gr but can't find any -- Speer makes a 350 --.458 for 458 win mag but doesn't make any for my gun- do you know any one who does?? Ammoe- do you want info on BBQ- I have it now.

Widux,
.458 is the actual caliber of the 45-70 and the .458 Winchester Magnum. The bullets are the same caliber, .458.
'Nuff said.

Thanks larry,
Only problem is the .458 cal Speer 350 grianers are too long(won't cycle) for the lever 1895 Marlin-I had some loaded for my custom gun built on a #3 frame and guy didn't try them when bear hunting- funny story- NOW-
if you set them back enough they have much pressure and need other work- so i just removed bullets and kept them for something else. Merry Christmas
