OK guys I was a tad excited yesterday. Soreloser and I arrived at the duck club at about 8:30 am on Friday. We loaded my stuff in his Jeep and headed off to look the club over. We were somewhat limited as to where we could go because we like to leave the ducks undisturbed on off days. In any event we cruised some dikes and found they were covered with coyote tracks. We found one spot that was a highway for the coyotes to use as it allowed them to cross a canal where they could jump the narrow water way. After a half hour of scouting and gettting out on foot to inspect areas; Soreloser said he had a plan. We parked the Jeep and unloaded our gear, that is when I realized that I had forgotten the Ball 'O Death at home. Never fear, Wayne is here. We took the FX3 and Wayne on about a quarter mile walk. There was a pond to our left and the Alamo River running next to it. We set up in the corner where the river met the pond. Soreloser took Wayne and the caller about fifty to sixty yards out. There was really thick brush, about 50 feet thick along the river and Soreloser said he would bet that coyotes were in the thick stuff by the river. Our plan was to set the caller and Wayne about 40 yards away from the thick stuff to see if we could lure a coyote out. It was about nine thirty in the morning as Soreloser got to where he was gonna place the caller. I am putting on my mask and gloves when I see Soreloser put Wayne and the caller down, swing his rifle up and shoot toward the river. I was shocked and had no idea what he was doing. He looked at me and shrugged his shoulders continued to set up the caller and Wayne as I sat there wondering if this was a predator hunting tactic no one had told me about. He then walked away from the caller toward where he had shot. He bent down and began dragging a dead coyote back to me. Turns out it was standing out there as he was setting up so he shot it on the run as the coyote ran toward the river. I assumed we would pick up and move somewhere else but Soreloser said there were tracks everywhere so there might by more. I didn't hold out much hope especially given my recent luck. In fact things had gotten so bad I suggested to Switch that since I found a good spot last week and he had killed a coyote there that I didn't even see over my decoy that maybe I was destined to be a Coyote Caddy; you know carry Switch's decoy and call, measure his distances, that sort of thing. Anyway back to the story. Soreloser sat next to me and started with a distress sound. Not 90 seconds into it he said there's a coyote coming fast on the left. My view was blocked by a bush in front of me but as the coyote cleared it I saw movement. He was running through the brush and would be visible then he wouldn't as luck would have it he stopped and Soreloser could see his head clearly but I was again blocked. The coyote then ran up to Wayne and I could see him plainly but Wayne was between me and the my target the coyote moved to the right and made a rush on Wayne as I hit him with the .204 a little back, but down he went. He struggled to get up and I broke his neck with the next one. He died a couple feet from Wayne who was visibly shaken yikes.gif

I was on cloud nine, our hunt had only lasted five minutes and we had these two down. After a brief second stand we took photos and high fived. My second coyote ever had been very exciting. We spent the rest of the day in the heat attempting to lure dogs in the desert, we had one come in hot but he busted us, and we saw two others before the day was over. I had a blast and Soreloser showed me a few tricks as well. I have to say that I know for a fact Tim could have shot that coyote three times before it came into my view and I want to thank him for letting me take it.

The next day we went to my blind for a little duck shoot and had thirteen of our fourteen possible birds in a little over and hour. It took us an hour to get the last bird because they stopped flying for a while. We ended up the some spoons and teal as you would expect by the Salton Sea but what a mixed bag after those. We shot widgeon, bluebill, gadwall and the frosting on the cake was a beautiful drake Red Head that looks like its going on Soreloser's wall at home, great shot Tim. By the way for those who don't know it Soreloser is a real pro on a duck call. I'm gonna get some free lessons, I can blow a duck call just OK and a honker call pretty darn good, but Tim on a duck call is in a whole other league. Tim has the duck pics and I will let him post those on this thread if that is OK. Here are the coyotes we got.

cowboy86, I hate to tell you this, but around the Salton Sea is no big secert. It has been predator hunted for the last half-a-century. A good spot in that area is the Chocolate mountians to the east, don't worry about the bombs.

For hunting coyotes at Wister refuge off season (duck), I am under the understanding that you can only use shotguns. No rifles. Is this correct?

cowboy, onecoyote meant no harm... Misinterpretting notes on these websites &/or e mails happens easily (which was not him btw). We all fall trap to that, and is one of the things I hate about these PC's.

Anyway, it is actually both true & funny what he stated (watching out for the bombs).

The Chocolate Mountains is a Naval Gunnery and Bombing Range. There are unexploded ordnance laying all over and Navy jets making bombing runs. The coyotes are probably used already to the noise of exploding ordnance and the scream of low flying jets. Careful that you don't get charged with armed trespassing on Federal Property. 'Nuff said.
