Missing this noble bird. Last time I took a pheasant was when I lived in Sacto and went to a type C area where DFG had planted birds for a special hunt day before. Found some bids when opened to public.
I prefer wild birds, won't pass up DFG plant either. Live in SoCal now and don't know where to go, I need help!
Thanks guys for your input!

For Pheasant in So Ca I think you pretty much have to go north into the Sacramento Valley or to the Imperial Valley. There are lots of previous posts that talk about Pheasant in the IV that will give you an idea of where to hunt.
Talk to you later

Thanks Mike C-
Makes me reflect on the Butte Basin refuges in the Sacto Valley. I was out of hunting for a few years, honing my flyfishing for steelhead skills and a couple times I went collecting crawdads next to those refuges and saw pheasant everywhere. Not just rignecks either the local clubs introduced other species too. Kicking my self now. Maybe I'll find some hunters with dogs on this site.
We'll have to hit the quail sometime. I'm going to try and scout a dove/quail spot midweek and try to hit it on the opener. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-jhp-rocks.gif

http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-idea-blu.gif the largest populations for pheasant is still north, up in your old stomping grounds.
the central valley has them too, but, as with most hunting here, you got to pay your dues to find them.
I'll be heading down to the Imperial Valley, been doing so since the early 90's after spending the late 70's and 80's heading north.
As with the northern treks, south, is fast becoming a similar situation, posted, no hunting, fewer ground to get on, fewer birds, more hunters, etc.
But, I've been having great hunts down there, as well as the second dove season shooting is almost as good as the first!
You're caught in the middle from your neck of the woods now, if I were living there, I most likely would head into the central valley, maybe go to Los Banos and Mendota and try my luck there. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/two-cents.gif

Redleg,
The best pheasant hunting is north of Sacramento. I don't know about Southern CA. In Central CA where I live, between Fresno and Sacramento, the state refuges are the best bet. In most areas around here, the wild pheasant population is either very weak or non-existant. They have disppeared in many areas. There are some areas that may a few birds but you have to know the area.
I go to the state refuges in the Los Banos area. There aren't many birds on the private lands where farming is intensive. There used to be alot of birds in the cotton fields years ago but now farmers have to plow the cotton fields early to the worms that threaten cotton. There are birds around the duck clubs but those fields are all fenced and only members are allowed.

Thanks Newman.
Maybe I could stay over night in Santa Nella some weekend and hunt pheasants at refuges and chukar/quail in the hills.
