Call Sutter and find out if they have any upland areas to hunt until the duck hunters start leaving. It's not worth getting yeld at and you really don't want to screw them up anyway. The Lodge has lots of good stuff with lots of birds -- and lots of hunters. Have fun. I get to decide between Delevan and Grizzly.
Sutter has a phesant only field and I have had prety good luck in it usualy not many phesant hunters there everybody wants to go after ducks.I heard gray lodge had a bad hatch and the numbers are down.

Call Gray Lodge. They've done rennovations and areas may have changed in the past couple years.
2005 Gray Lodge opener, saturday: 400 hunters saturday, 372 roosters. 987 roosters for the season at Gray Lodge.

I don't know about Sutter but Gray Lodge has had pretty good numbers of birds in the past. But here's the deal, you will have LOTS of company at GL. A couple years ago I drew the opener and went with a friend. We got out near one of the dry fields around 7:30. As it got closer to 8am more and more people showed up. There were people standing 20 yards apart from each other and at the crack of 8, off they went in a near run. Now keep in mind that there are equal number of people coming from the opposite direction. When I saw this I said the heck with it and backed off. You can guess what happened, as the two groups got closer it sppokked the birds that were between them and then all hell broke loose. Birds and shots going everywhere, really, really dangerous.
If you have a good dog your better off getting away from the crowd and going back to the dry fields in the afternoon when all the yahoos have gone home.
We did that very thing a couple of years ago at Sac. We waited until almost 11 and then went through a dry field that had had tons of people in it earlier and guess what, we got our limits.

Hmmm?[/b]
How I interpreted the stats on gray Lodge was: 93 total pheasant hunters that took 372 birds. Is this interpretation correct?

If 93 hunters took 372 birds that would be more than 4 birds per hunter - illegal.
I believe the numbers used to get the .73 birds per hunter were 372 birds, and 509 total hunters.
Free roam you can hunt waterfowl and pheasant.
I'm thinking that's how the numbers work.
Maybe the 93 number was for pheasant-only hunters?
Any case GL seems to hold many more pheasant than Sutter - per hunter average also higher.
