I use military surplus ammo in my M1A Scout Squad Rifle. ###I assume that the ammo is of recent U.S. manufacture. ###Is this type of explosion possible with the surplus .308 that is offered at the Angeles Shooting Range? ###Should I spend the extra money for the factory stuff?

I found this link to update the thread, this is the results of the gun exam of the rifle in question. I will admit I have not had a chance to read it myself (Yet) but I still wanted to post it anyway.

This rifle was discussed quite heavily on a list I am on. ###Essentially, the fault was in the barrel and had nothing to do with the ammunition.

As for mil surp ammo... there's some good stuff, some mediocre stuff, and some bad stuff. ###Some that was manufactured for machine guns may not be well suited to an M1A. ###For specifics I'd get into a list that deals primarily with this type of rifle and ask there.

Surp ammo problem can become even more complicated. ###UK NRA/Commonwealth highpower competition (like Palma but at 300, 500, 600, 900, 1000 all prone) requires the use of 308 range ammo although there are special classes for reloaders. ###The range ammo at Bisley camp was/is manufactured by Radwood Green who make all the UK military Nato stuff. ###Like all NATO 7.62x51 the 150gr bullet is seated deep to function dependably in MGs. ###The Bisley gunsmiths therefore chambered all match rifles with short throats/leads to shoot this ammo accurately. ###The consequence was a few high-presssure maladies when regular SAAMI ammo was chambered and the bullet crushed into the lands. ###The ammo at Bisley has now changed spec to match SAAMI, still made by RG to higher tolerances. ###Every gun now has to pass a chambering test before it can be used in competition. ###It aint as simple as 'load and fire'
