Savage 110

I could not believe it. ###I buddy I work with just bought a Savage 110 with a composite stock. ###He broke the barrel in properly and called me up to brag. ###He told me this rifle he bought for a little less than $400 was shooting 1/2 inch groups or better at 100 yards.

Sure enough, I saw the gun perform. Talk about a hidden secret, this gun can flat out shoot tight groups.

I have invested thousand of dollars on custom rifles to see a Savage 110 shoot just as tight of groups as my customs.

I am thinking about getting one in .270.

ANybody else have any experiences with a Savage 110.

I shoot one in 30-06. ###There was a manufacturing problem with mine, where the scope mount holes weren't all tapped, so the scope worked loose after a few shots. ###Drove me nuts trying to get it zeroed in. ###I sent it back and they fixed it for me pretty danged fast, and now it shoots pretty well. ###Still figuring out which ammo it likes best, but in a four shot group (bench, of course), I can almost always make three of the four holes touch at 100. ###But there's also always a "flyer", but even that is only about an inch off. ###

Jim Carmichael (Outdoor Life gun writer) is always talking about what an understimated and under-valued rifle the 110 is. ###It's definitely bare bones, but it's plenty accurate for a deer gun. ###

On mine, the factory wood stock was pretty straight, and quite punishing at the range. ###I replaced it with a Bell and Carlson composite, and that really made a difference. ###Also, it seems like a lot of guys have mentioned that they don't care much for the factory trigger, but I don't know enough about "good" triggers to be able to tell if that would help my gun or not. ###I'm happy with it like it is. ###

Scott (Grtwythunter) has an old 110 of mine in .223 that will shoot 5 into .5" pretty easily. ###It's even got the skinny barrel not the bull barrel setup. ###Pretty tough gun to beat for the price.

I have two savages, a 22-250 and a 338 Mag. and they both shoot the pants off any other rifle I own or have shot. They are (in my opinion) the most accurate "out of the box" rifle you can buy. I did have the trigger on my 22-250 modified to a lighter pull, the factory has them set pretty heavy. I would have to be crazy to even consider buying another brand!! my $.02 worth.

###I have the 110 savage in .270,shot it yesterday,pretty windy and im not really steady but im going to try agian today,it is a sweet rifle. The 110 has a trigger adjustment,if you take the stock of there is a spring adjustment with an allen screw to adjust the trigger pull,and 2 other screws for the safety(i would not touch these at all).

True,I would not suggest adjusting the safety screws either.

I have a 110E in 270. The action is a little different than the 110. It is the pickiest gun I own. Shoots some loads great, and others like crap. But I like the gun, she ain't pertty but gets the job done. Ans it does shoot the right loads better than the rem 700 270 that my wife shoots.

Its an overall good gun.

Well...Just my opinion....

Savages are quite possibly the best bang for the buck. ###However...< ahem > damn if they ain't just ugly! (Sorry, couldn't resist :D ).

As far as the triggers go, they range between; a real ingenious work of art to just plain crap. ###It largely depends when you rifle was manufactured and what model. ###All of the "Wal-Mart Specials" are of the lower end variety that claims "adjustable trigger" but falls short considerably (IMHO). ###The higher end models have four set screws. ###These can be adjusted for travel, poundage, over-travel, and safety (the important one). ###The lower end only offer three that adjust, well...poundage and safety. ###The problem with this is that with decreased poundage (you know, that wire spring on the side) is that it increases perceived creep because theres no way to take out creep/travel.

Accuracy wise, no one will tell you (well maybe one in a thousand) that savages won't shoot. ###Because of the barrel being threaded into the reciever until it reaches minimum headspace and then the second "locking collar" locking the barrel in place they are easy as pie to set head space on. ###On the prodction side of the house it's a miricle of production engineering. ###All the barrel are cut/threaded in one place, the receivers threaded in another; by lot. ###No "hand fitting, chambering and headspacing" each individual rifle. ###Just cut the barrels, put the bolt in the receiver, put a headspace guage in, spin the barrel on til it stops, then lock the collar done...Voila! ###Perfect headspacing everytime.

Okay I'm rambling now, so I'll get off my soapbox now..< shuffle > ###< shuffle >

I won a 110 in 308 in a raffle 2-3yrs ago, it sat in the box in my safe up until last spring when I decided to shoot it, I put a 3x9 bushnell that I had laying around on it bore sighted it had some factory PMC ammo and went to the range, two shots and I right on the X ring at a hundred, then a three shot group of 3/4" I have done nothing to the gun and it has shot 3/4" or better the last two time's I took it, now has a total of 30 rounds through it.:jaw-drop:

Bought myself a Savage in .270 for xmas. Havn't had a chance to really shoot from a bench, due to bad weather ,everytime I was at the country house . Hoping to get out with it soon!!

The most accurate gun I own is a savage 110 in .223 caliber with a sporter barrel. ###With the loads it likes it will shoot half inch groups every single time. ###If I just throw anything in it, it will consistiently shoot 3/4 inch groups. ###It has a harris bipod and is absolutely deadly on any ground squirrel at or inside of 250 yards. ###And it has taken many out to 350 but the misses there are a factor of my errors in range estmates.

The second most accurate rifle I own is a savage 110 in 25-06 with a sporter barrel. ###It shoots consistient 3/4 inch groups with 120 grain Hornady Custom Shop ammo. ###It too has a bipod and any standing coyote inside of 400 had better watch out if that gun is around. ###

I have several remingtons, winchesters, and rugers. ###Those two Savages out shoot all of them.

I got one in 30-06, great bargain shoots great, groups great, synthetic stock on it does a great job it may not be the best looking rifle but when i am in the woods i am not out there for fashion it is a hunting rifle, it gets scratched, dropped etc still performs great. ###

I havent tried a 110 Savage but, we do own a model 12 (single shot) Savage. My dad put a 6-24-44mm BSA scope on it. At 250 yards I was keeping a 1/2" group, but my dad was at less then a 1/4" at the same distance. In my mind there is no doubt that Savage has some of the most accurate rifles out there. Our rifle is in .223 remington and we do reload our own ammo. 55 grain Nosler ballistic tips.Before we started reloading we shot that UMC Remington stuff and we were keepin 4" groups at 100 yards. I also think that you can make any rifle 1/2" groupers at 200 yards if you know your reloding stuff.
