http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-peta-sucks-sign.gif I am heading out to Convict lake in the sierras late next week & want to know of any, (general) areas to maybe hunt chucker & quail? Maybe within an hours drive from the cabins up at the lake. My wife & girls will be with me at the cabin & my 14 year old will hunt with me if we find an area. Thanks for any advise. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-peta-sucks-sign.gif

There are mountain quail up and around that area. I have never seen any though. No chukar around Convict Lake, drive down south about 200 miles to the Ridgecrest area and there are lots of chukar there.

....saw a super DUMB covey in the gorge directly below Crowley's dam the week before the opener....I wouldn't hesitate to check out that area directly east of the gorge, as you drive up and out of it, either.....you can go in from 395 either east of Tom's Place (Gorge Road or something) or take Benton Crossing Road east (then south) toward Crowley....looked very birdy (as in quail), but I saw the chuks down directly below the dam....please go take care of those birds for me, will ya? http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-gunfighter-yellow.gif

Thanks , I'll try Sherwin Creek. Anybody know if it is good near Bishop or Big Pine? http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley-peta-sucks-sign.gif

I lived in Bishop and hunted chukar all over the Eastern Sierras. I've seen them in the "Gorge", south end of Crowley, Sherman Grade, Rovana, Big Pine Cyn, and of course the White Mts. There are also Valley Quail below Paradise Res. This pic are from the Rovanna area.

RVRKNG:
Besides the fact, "it's in the hole", if you take a good walk spoiled up any of the drainages on the east side of the Sierras below Bishop, you will find resident chuckar. A lot will be hold overs, and you better be able to run uphill to get them to flush.
Have fun,
Kevin
