[attachment=33953:attachment]I did a solo backpack trip last weekend, near Highland lakes. I saw 5 bucks and this one offerd a good broadside shot at less then 100 yrds. I just got back into deer hunting after a 10+ year break. And this is the first year that I have done any solo backpacking.

Good looking buck! Congradulations on your successful return to deer hunting. Just spent last weekend in D5 w/o any success or sightings at all. Good to know they're still out there.

Thanks for the nice replys!! I hunted around bear valley ski area 3 days a week all archery season and only saw 2 small forks at 200 yrds. Before I took my break from hunting I always saw a lot of deer there. I have been trying to get the nerve to do some solo backpacking, and finally just hiked in a hour before dark and forced myself to do it. Last week I went in about 3 miles and camped at about 8600 feet. Sat. around noon I jumped 3 bucks while stillhunting a bedding area. I wanted to hunt the same area sun. morning but the wind was wrong so I took the long way around. I hiked over a ridge above timberline at 9100 plus feet and came in from the other side. Just before 10:00 I spotted two bucks one facing me and the other broadside, he was the unluckey one. One shot behind the sholder with my 300 win. mag. put him down. 6 miles later with a 70 pound pack and my hunt was over.
