30-30 Win. @ Tejon

I'm going to use a Marlin 336 30-30 Win. at the Tejon Ranch the weekend of April 12-14. ###The gun is not scoped. ###I've ordered some 170gr. Nosler Partition rounds for the hunt. ###If they don't arrive on time I'll use Remington 170gr. Core Lokt. ###I plan on keeping shots around 100 yds.

Are many hogs taken within 100yds? ###
What are my chances of getting within 100yds of a hog?
Does a 30-30 with 170gr. rounds generate sufficient energy to humanely kill a hog (I've seen the ballistics. ###Anyone done it?)?

I welcome any and all comments.

You're Marlin will do a fine job. The last hunt they had quite a few hogs were taken with .30-30's. There were a few times I wish I had one instead of what I was carrying. (Keep the comments to youreself songdog ). There are a ton of times where a scope can be more of a hinderance rather than helpfull.

Getting within 100 yrds is not that much of an issue that I've seen on that ranch, just watch the wind and hunt smart.

Just make sure that the new ammo you have ordered shoots and groups well and you'll be fine.

p.s. there is nothing wrong with the Remington ammo that you have now.

Try leading a running pig with a scope. It's not that easy. I missed 2 pigs this last year with a scope. Wish I'd had My wichester 94. I've a few bucks with it out to 100 yds with open sights. I know theres a big difference between the two. I'm just saying I like it & don't under estimate it. I've heard of guys shooting pigs up to 6 times with a 30/06. As they say shot placement lol. Always hear that one. Good luck

The .30-.30 should be more than enough to kill hogs at any distance you can hit -- especially with those nuclear tipped bullets your ordered.

jrrifenbark, I believe it was a military slogan. I had a traaining officer in the Sheriff's Dept. that used to drill that slogan into our heads, guess it kinda stuck.

30-30 will be fine. ###As to range, a lot of people shots pigs with bows and handguns, so keep the wind in your face and be move quietly and you'll have no problem getting within range. ### ###

OH my my your not using a double magnum wizz bang super long range pig blaster, shame on you, with the dirty dirty it may take you, as many as one shot to harvest your pig.

My evprience with hogs (and some pretty big) any 300 cal will do, just watch the shot placement, I killed two last year, and one was over ###300 lb with a 243 - 80 grain core loct and have had ###them run on me with with 44 mag and a 308 with a match 168 grain bulett (federal). So placement is the word. I also took one with 00 buck at 30 yds a few
years ago and he was so big we had to get help to load him onto my 4 weeler. He also bent the spreader bar when we tried to raise him for skinning. He now resides on my wall, and my wife hates him. ### Uggly with 2 gs

I have heard a lot about the Remington Core Lokt. ###Would they be better of hogs than Nosler Partitians of equal weight(170gr)? ###Would 150gr. be better for in a 30-30? ###I have fired 150 Power Points at the Angeles Range and noticed that they shot MUCH flatter than the 170gr.

You guys are nutz. ###California hogs are some bad animals. ###I go after them with a 5 gallon bucket necked down to shoot a 300-grain Nosler Partition. ###The gun is a little heavy to lug around, but those hogs seldom take more than two shots before they take a dirt nap. :dancinred:

I think that I will take it with me next time too. ###That pig took one step and collapsed. ###I had a broadside shot, more or less, and the bullet exited the left shoulder. ###I never found the entrance wound. ###I think it moved as I shot. ###I think I hit it in the neck. ###I cut the head off when I thought we were going to drag it out, so I didn't have the neck to examine when I started to reflect on the event. ###Come to think of it, I think it weighted 300lbs and the shot was a little over 250 yds. ###Ya, that sounds about right.
