Mirroring CNN's Poll of the Day

Today's CNN poll is "Should certain subjects be off limits to movie producers?" I'm not sure what news story prompted their poll, but two are making some headlines lately; one much moreso than the other.

1) The Clinton's whining and making all this fuss about getting the 9/11 documentary right or not showing it.

2) A recent movie about assasinating President Bush. (Which I haven't heard the GOP whining about)

I purposely did not include a "Maybe" option. Too many loop holes. I admire the freedom of speech that we have in American, but I'm also in favor of the limitations we impose (like crying FIRE in a crowded theater). I think we have a good balance there.

At any rate, it made me want to read your views and opinions about the issue. Are there subjects (in your opinion) that should be off limits to movie producers? What say ye?

Just because we have allowed the government to trash the 2nd Amendment, doesn't mean we should allow government to trash the 1st Amendment.

No. 1 is not true. No. 2 is in poor taste.

But, I still believe that "...no law shall be passed to abridge the freedom of..."

The freedom of speech works both ways. If I do not choose to view trash or material that is disturbing to me, I don't watch... That's why God gave us a brain...

Hmmmm, that's interesting easymoney. I wasn't thinking so much of trashing MY brain as I was trashing EVERYONE ELSE's brain. More like the violent video game argument.

Hey Belch; old CS would have no problem letting you decide what was trash and what wasn&#39;t --- but I sure don&#39;t trust the government to make that choice!

I can definitely think of certain subjects that should be off limits and yes, made illegal by the government.

No such thing as complete and total freedom of speech. If you think about it I&#39;m sure you can think of some extreme examples and honestly be in favor of not allowing movies to be made about them.

I&#39;m not talking about political dissent here. I&#39;m just saying that there are no absolutes.

Ahhh, but trash is only identified by looking. Else how would we know it&#39;s trash until it&#39;s too late -- smell the movie trailer?

No so such thing as unlimited freedom of speech. The people whom you maligned will sue you off the shirt on your back if you make malicious and untrue accusations. Or by ridicule of whacko ideas. Or by the market forces if you make trashy movies or TV production.
