We caught these two catfish on a trotline in the Ouachita River this past weekend. One's a blue, the other we call a flathead. Good eatin'!

Those are some healthy looking cats S&P. I bet you are looking forward to releasing those bad boys into lake crisco! what did you have on the trot line?

Did you nail them to a tree? If so, why?

Yup, I nailed them to the tree because I was skinning them alone and didn't have any other way to hold them.

They took a swim in Lake Crisco that very night and the crowd loved them! I was using small bream hooked through the tail for bait. I also tried chicken gizzards but didn't have any luck with them.

edited cause I can't speel

Nice night of catfshing S&P. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smiley_10sign.gif

GW69, we use catfish skinning pliers to strip off the skin on catfish. They don't have scales so you have to tackle them different. The pliers look like big nail clippers, bout 1" wide.

Anyone doing any jugging there S&P?

Are there catfish in Cali?

Camo Snob;

Yes, there is plenty of catfish in CA. Just about every river, lake, impoundment has catfish. We have Channel, blue, and flathead catfish. I believe the state record is around 100 lbs for one that was caught in southern CA. Alot of the lakes in the mountain areas also have catfish. due to the colder water they do not get as big, but boy are they darn good eating coming out of that colder water.

We do some jugging in the oxbow lakes in the river bottoms, but we don't jug in the river. The G & F guys frown on that because of the barge traffic that uses the river for moving crude oil. I don't know why it's a big deal where the barges are concerned, but it's the rules so we abide by them.

We use plain limb lines and hang yo-yos also, but the rules on them are pretty strict so we mostly stick to trot lines.
