Went out Friday night to camp with my son in Carrizo PLains.
Woke up at the crack of dawn. While I was driving to my spot. I saw a badger , tried to take a picture of it but no luck ran into tall grass. (What's there season?) Also saw coyote pups playing. (I'll let them grow a little more.) Go to my spot and started to walk aroun and saw my first jack. Bang he's dead snipe.gif .
Waliking some more I saw one run from a bush at about 10 yards. I shot his right back leg out. He countined to run ( I was amazed to see him running still.) the 2nd shot was to his head. ( I think that did him in.) He was about 30 yards for the second shot.
I was about to leave when I saw one jack hiding in the shade. I shot him at about 30 yards, then another jack popped out from a bush. Got him too. Both were in about 10 seconds. That was a rush.

Hope you all enjoyed the pix.

P.S. There are a lot of Cotton tails this year. Hurry up July 1st.

How do you cook the jacks?Do they taste different from cottentail?

I never tried Cotton Tails. But the way I prepared the Jacks, was soak them in milk for two day in the refrigerator and then added salt and pepper. They tasted like steak.

I left these for the Hawks. There were a lot out there.

I have found jacks in the areas I have hunted to taste like what they eat -- bitter sage and other not so great vegetation. They also tended to be tougher than cottontail which I find closer to water sources and luscious green vegetation. I have cooked jacks, diced up, in deep, rendered, bacon fat and they tasted, and looked, just like beef.
