Skydiver killed after striking head on plane

May 11, 2002

SUFFOLK, Virginia (AP) -- A former Navy SEAL and skydiving instructor died after he hit his head on a plane during a jump and fell to the ground without his parachute deployed.

Brad Foster, 42, of Virginia Beach, was one of 14 parachutists practicing for a show this weekend when he jumped from the plane Friday, officials said.

Foster, who had more than 4,000 jumps to his credit, likely died upon impact with the plane, fire Capt. James Judkins Jr. said.

Foster's body was found in the back yard of a house about a quarter-mile from Suffolk Municipal Airport, where the flight originated.

Today at approx. 4:00 p.m. Brad Foster struck his head on the tail of the King Air. Brad was second out on a planned CRW jump. First jumpers exit was uneventful. Brad left 3 seconds later followed by the third jumper who's exit was also uneventful. Based on video it appears Brad did a very aggressive exit and as this was to be a CRW jump he was not wearing a helmet and no AAD. The other CRW jumpers saw Brad on his back until impact. No attempt was made to deploy either parachute. Based on the dent in the tail, I'm not sure if an AAD would have mattered. The last thing anyone saw of Brad was a Big smile on his face as he left the aircraft. Brad loved CRW and had just returned from breaking a World CRW Record in Florida.

Brad will be truly missed by everyone. Brad was Brad, he was, and is, a warrior.
