Everyone had the terrible duty assignments but every once in a great while we lucked out and drew a great post or port of call. What was your best duty?
My worst duty assignemnt was the TDYs to Keesler ###AFB in Mississippi. I went through initiial training there after basic and I hated it. The cockroaches were half a foot long. The water is really soft so when you get out of the shower it feels like you still have a film of soap on you. You couldn't even walk on the beach barefoot because of the damage left over from Hurricane Camille. We had to drive to Florida to get any beachwalking in. The locals dispised the military too.
Best duty for me would have been in Germany. The wine and beer are lengendary. You could travel pretty cheaply and visit several countries in one day. I played on a Canada/US all star ice hockey team so we traveled all over Europe courtesy of the US and Canadian government.

Worst duty assignment: ###3-1/2 years of shipboard life. ###Included two WestPac's, but that didn't necessarily make up for it.
Best: ###16 years of Navy Reserves with the SeaBee's.

Worst Nuclear Prototype Training Unit in Idaho. ###2 hour bus ride to work, which was out in the desert, ###12hour work day, then a 2 hour bus ride back. ###I did this for 9 months before all the traiing was done. ###We were not allowed to drive out there as students.
Best: ###Being homported in San Diego. ###That was a great time with all the beaches and TJ and Ensenada just a short drive south.

well i hated being in the fleet... but for two years onboard a dive ship i got to hit australia twice, indonesia five times, singapore five times, thailand four times, hong kong five times and a bunch of other great places once or twice... that was pretty good... bad was in Hawaii ( i know it sounds good) onboard an oiler, we never went anywhere except circles in the pacific. ###i hated that ship.

mountaneer, where were you in s. k. i was at camp humphreys and loved it, about 1 hour cab ride from osan a.b. cost to ride to osan was 6 bucks split 2-4 ways. the air base had much better nco club and px than us. i really enjoyed my tour, i even put in for a 6 month extension to ets but was rejected. it did take about 4 months to adjust, i was p.o. ed because i was hoping to go to germany but didnt get it. if i knew then what i know now i could have made some good cash sending ###stuff home like the teakwood tables or mink blankets. no inspections since we paid 23 bucks per month for house boys and pretty much left alone when off duty. i liked the soju also but if you forgot to pour the clear stuff off the top u wake up and the old tongue would be swelled up so much couldnt talk. it was kinda hard on married guys since they had to leave the family at home unless they paid expenses themselves.
