Fawn rescued with C-section

ARLINGTON - If it hadn't been for a wildlife volunteer who stopped by the side of the road, Lucky Buck might have died in his mother's womb.

The male fawn, now 10 days old, had not been born yet when a car struck his mother on Highway 2 east of Gold Bar. State wildlife agents shot the doe to end her misery.

At first, they didn't notice she was pregnant. But a passing wildlife volunteer, Josh Eriksen, did.

He borrowed a knife from an agent and, with help from a deer hunter, performed a Caesarean section.

Twins emerged. Only one was alive, but not breathing.

After Eriksen gave the fawn mouth-to-snout resuscitation, the buck took his first breaths.

Lucky Buck has since taken his first shaky steps at Sarvey Wildlife Center, a private wildlife rehabilitation center east of Arlington.

Before Lucky Buck is released, he will move in with surrogate parents - deer too injured to leave the center but still able to teach him survival skills.
