Default blacktail archery hunt help

I want to plan a trip for fall 2010 archery hunt for blacktail. I have a brother who has stayed at a forest cabin at Kook Lake 4-5 times over the past 20 yrs and loved the area but he is not a hunter. Is this area good for blacktail, or are there other cabins that offer better hunting with equal remotness, beauty, etc. Look forward to hearing your sugestions.

Alaska a HUGE place. Can I have an idea on what island that is on or a general idea on the region you would be hunting blacktails?

Kook Lake is 45 miles (72 km) northeast of Sitka, near the eastern shores of Chichagof Island between the outlets of Tenakee Inlet and Peril Straits. This is a place my family knows but I am open to explore any location where I can rent a forest service cabin to use as a base camp. Thanks for taking time to help.

I don't have any firsthand knowledge of kook lake, but I worked in SEAK for a few summers and concluded that anywhere with quick access to the subalpine is a prime hunting spot, as long as the weather isn't hot.

You might look into Black Bear Lake cabin on Prince of Wales island, as it's at 1600 feet while the kook lake cabin is almost at sea level. That means less climbing every morning.

Kook lake, being right by the ocean will have salmon fishing in addition to hunting, if you're looking for an all-round sporting trip.

Why are you bowhunting? Bring a rifle if you want success. You'll have to do some long difficult stalks with a bow. Almost nobody hunts with a bow up there.

I have been talking with a wildlife biologist with the Fish and Game that conducts deer surveys and have decided to hunt on west Chichagof Island. I will head out for opening weekend and spot and stalk in the high alpine meadows. I do hunt with bow for the challenge but I will take a rifle for a last ditch effort if I cant manage to score with a bow.

Still open for any advice.

I've been in that neck of the woods along the coast with work and there are a lot of deer on the beach in winter, there are also a lot of bears on those the ABC islands (Admiralty, Baranof, and Chichagof) they are all close to each other and all pretty darn big. It should be good as long as you get to where the deer are. Alpine early in the season and the beaches late in the season. Good luck!
