Well, if it's a stag trip the ABC in Anchorage can be an interesting stop in the evening. It is a 21 and over and venue for men, if you're catching my drift. As for major points of interests or must see areas...well the whole drive is pretty dang good. Done it more than a few times myself. Keep an eye out for moose. Son of a guns have a death wish and a 1500 pound critter will do a little more damage than any 200 pound deer from the lower 48. While in Homer, the spit, where you will go fishing if you choose to, is a nice place to walk around. There is an excellent sushi spot called Wasabi's if you're into that kind of thing that rivals most sushi bars in California...trust me. Clamming is an activity that can be pursued at low tides where a -2.0 will yield the best numbers. Whiskey Gulch, about 20 miles or so north of Homer is a good spot, as is Clam Gulch for razor clams. Across Kachemak Bay )K-bay) in Homer is could for the steamer clams, watch the size restrictions noted in the DFG fishing regs. Lots of trails over there as well with Mountain Goats to take pictures of. Chances are on the trails is that there will be black bears so use caution and brush up on what to do with bear encounters. Some people opt for the pepper spray, I opt for my .454 Ruger sidearm. Since black bear season is open year round in the Homer area. There is a guy that does horseback rides at the head of K-Bay and you can see a little bit more of the backwoods with plenty of trees and chances of seeing a brown bear are fair and thousands of specklebellies and dusky canada geese. The Anchor River is 15 miles north of Homer and has a decent silver run. Tight lining is a popular method, but I like to get the fish to bite where eggs and lures work. Dolly Varden will be thick and can be a pain when targeting the salmon.
The "Fishin' Hole" on the spit is a decent place to fish off the beach that is located on the spit. They are planted salmon and the limit is 1 king per day and 6 silvers per day. On a flood tide the bite tends to pick up. To describe the place is like an Olympic sized pool that has a channel to the ocean on a high tide where the fish can come and go. It can be a hectic place at times, but a secret is that try and find a high tide late in the evening since that is when the fish are coming in and fish that when most people are going to bed or having dinner. This is the land of the midnight sun and take advantage of it since normal day hours are when the tourists are out and about. August will have more darkness as the days are getting shorter but will still be plenty long enough. Hope I helped for the Homer neck of the woods. If you have any more questions, please feel free to ask.
