Former Tejon Guide Kicks Off New Video Series with Wild Hog Field Care

Ron Gayer, hunting guide, outdoor writer, and wildlife photographer, has now ventured into the video production realm. He has released the first DVD from his The Guide's Guide to Hunting video series, titled The Complete Guide to Hog Field Care.
Advertised on Gayer's website (www.theguidesguidetohunting.com)as "a comprehensive, step-by-step instructional program that walks you through in detail, the complete process of field dressing, skinning, quartering, and caping your wild hog, including the tools required for a successful hunt," the video takes you through the process from the time the hog is down to putting it in the cooler for the drive home.
In addition to his guiding experience, Gayer has been delivering seminars on wild hog hunting techniques, strategies, and tools for several years. He knows a lot about the animals, as he says in his own words, "I have hunted so many hogs I lost count years ago. I do have some experience field dressing the beast."
That experience comes through loud and clear in the DVD. Ron knows his stuff, and he presents the field dressing, skinning, and quartering process in clear, easy-to-follow steps. Even better, he sets the whole thing up under real, field conditions. Unlike many instructional videos that rely on diagrams and hypothetical situations, Gayer shows us where to shoot the hog, then goes out and shoots one. The camera doesn't flinch as each step is demonstrated, from cutting the anus to emptying the body cavity. It's not recommended for dinner-time viewing.
The videography is really nice throughout, and during the field dressing scenes it's fairly easy to follow the steps and see what he's doing. He makes it look easy, but that's because he does it so efficiently. If a new hunter follows Gayer's simple instruction, he'll have his hog cleaned and quartered in short order.
The pacing is a little slow at first, but it's important to remember that this is not a "hunting video" so much as it is a tutorial. You're not going to see an hour's worth of setups and kill shots. There are two kills on the DVD, and both are specifically included in order to provide subjects for the field dressing demonstrations.
This instructional DVD is exactly what is needed on the market for new hunters, especially in these days when more hunters come to the sport at a later age without the benefit of a lifelong mentor to teach them the finer points. One viewing of this video will probably not make anyone an expert, but; if the viewer is paying attention, he or she will be much better prepared to take on the daunting task of disassembling that first wild hog.
There are three more instructional DVDs in this first series. They include:
- The Total Turkey Tutorial
- Hunting Strategies for Wild Hogs
- From Bench to Field:Guns and Optics
