Shaffer Archery Rests Get Some Attention

Brian Kirksey - SF Bay Area, CA
November 02, 2006

Schaffer Performance archery has done a great job engineering quality rests and catching archers’ and bow hunters’ attention. Schaffer has three current models out; MAT-1 which compliments Mathew’s line of bows; the E-2; the universal rest that fits most bows including Bowtech and Mathews Apex-7s, and the TEC-1 which compliments Hoyt’s lineup.

The MAT-1 and the E-2 rests are available in the color black or Realtree Hardwoods camouflage. The TEC-1 is available in black or Realtree HD Green.

The MAT-1, E-2 and the TEC-1 mount as securely as mechanically possible to the riser. Schaffer has a mounting frame that forms similar to a press fit and set screws ensure a solid locking fit.

You have the option to mount the rest as a drop away or a fixed prong conventional style rest. Schaffer is proud to have designed a quick locking rope mechanism for easy rope length adjustments for fine tuning of the stroke of the prongs.

Easy to install and quiet
The Shaffer MAT-1 rest surprised the author with the ease of installation, it's quiet operation, and the accuracy he was able to achieve.

I am more than thrilled with the containment of the arrow as it is nestled between the ultra-silent, felt covered, stainless steel prongs. Teflon sleeves are also available. They also have developed a soft rubber floor pad to absorb the prongs as they come down against the rest shelf floor, eliminating more unwanted noise after the shot.

The Schaffer rest line has two “oil-lite” bearings and has micro-adjusts throughout. One size Allen wrench fits all.

The rests are fully machined and have stainless steel components throughout. There are no stamped, cast, or plastic components. Machining allows the manufacturer to deliver a rest of tight tolerances and precision which, in turn, helps reduce vibration that can loosen inferior fitted parts. They have also taken safety into consideration as they machined an attractive low profile guard into their rest line.
I found the setup to be quick and straight forward. The rest mounts so the prongs are just entering the rear of the sight window. The rest I tested was quieter than I expected, and I was pleasantly surprised. I have tried many other drop-away rests, and so far this is my favorite. The quick adjustment of the rope was a godsend.

Maybe it was a combination of a little luck, matched arrows, proper rest installation, etc, but after a couple of minor adjustments, I was ripping bullet holes through paper within four to five shots after setting up the rest. That’s a great starting point!

*Note: for APEX-7 users, the E-2 fits the Apex better than the MAT-1 and requires a modification to the mounting bracket to give you the proper height adjustment with this specific bow.
