Trying out the Badlands 2200

Kirk Edgerton - JHO ProStaff - Sacramento, CA
July 26, 2006

The Badlands 2200 fits the need
Solid and efficient design make the Badlands pack a great option for the hunter who wants to get away from the roads.

Knowing the shot was fatal, I slowly eased down the blood trail finding the hog after only 40 yards. The hog was maybe 90 pounds and would make some fine table fare, but with darkness now setting in and a long walk out in unfamiliar grounds ahead of me, I decided to pack the hog out whole. Little did I know how easy the Badlands 2200 Day Pack would make this.

At first glance, the 2200 is extremely sleek looking, due to its ‘bat wing’ construction. This allows the user easy access to two large outer pockets in which to carry needed supplies or in my case, a tripod and spotting scope. The ‘bat wings’ also double as a meat hauler when coupled with the fold-away blaze orange meat shelf that connects to the top of the pack. The animal fits snugly on the shelf, and the design eliminates shifting on uneven or over broken terrain.

Putting this pack on your shoulders is where the 2200 truly shines. The thermo-molded foam hip belt and back pad offer a plush and noise free ride. That, combined with the fully adjustable shoulder and sternum strap, makes this pack a pleasure to wear. The hip belt also offers the capability of adding accessories such as a range finder, bow holder, or GPS case with its outer gear loops.

With two internal pockets (one being the hydration sleeve) and five external, there is plenty of room for all of your gear, but the main compartment will hold the larger and bulkier items. Access to all pockets is simple and with the back panel zipper, grabbing your gear is as easy as loosening the hip belt, sliding the pack to your front and unzipping the main compartment. Gone are the days of laying your bag on the wet ground to retrieve or replace gear inside.

The only minor modifications I would make to the pack are to enlarge the hydration bladder to better accommodate a 100oz bladder and to redesign the external hole in which the hydration tube exits the pack. I had to slightly cut the exterior fabric to allow the bite valve more room exiting the pack when filling and/or removing.

If you’re searching for a comfortable, user friendly, and built-tough hunting pack to get you and your gear out of the woods and in style this upcoming hunting season, I would look no further than the Badlands 2200 Day Pack.
