Taking a Look at More New Gear from the 2006 SHOT

Chris Fullilove - JHO ProStaff - Texas
March 08, 2006

The 2006 SHOT (Shooting Hunting and Outdoor Trade) Show in Las Vegas, Nevada, once again was a grand showcase of gear, gadgets, and innovations. With show attendance and exhibit space larger than ever before, it is definitely the place to be if you want to see the latest and greatest in the outdoor industry. I met some great people, learned about their products, and I am here to share just a few products that I felt were different, new, or worthwhile to the outdoor community.

New Trail Cam packs a punch.

DC-6SS Trail Cam
New from Leaf River, the DC-6SS offers more powerful options and higher resolution.

Leaf River Outdoor Products is coming out with a new digital trail camera, the DC-6SS. The Leaf River line has been historically known for its great nighttime flash photos. Well, now you will get those same great nighttime (as well as daytime) photos with over 2.4 million more pixels than the current Leaf River trail camera (DC-2BU).

Another advanced feature included on the new DC-6SS is the early detection PIR sensor, which has five detection zones to trigger the camera as soon as the animal enters the picture window. And if these features are not enough, the new DC-6SS trail camera also has improved the viewing screen real estate to a 2.4” TFT LCD screen. A great feature when checking your cams in the woods. Camo beyond the treeline

Open Terrain Camo
Real-Tree enters the open pattern fray with their new Advantage Max-1.

For some reason, it seems like the large manufacturers of camouflage have had a bore-sight on deep woods patterns. RealTree’s Advantage Max1 Open Terrain is stepping beyond the treeline and away from the stereotypical dark, wooded camo patterns. Very similar to the South Texas Bushlan Camo or King’s Desert Shadow, Real Tree is now following suit by making a lighter, more open pattern that addresses hunters who hunt open terrain, prickly pear flats, sage hillsides, or open deserts. Logs that will survive the elements

I have found myself logging my time afield more and more lately. If I take a backpacking trip, I write down the food that I take and whether it tasted good, if the quantity was enough, and how many people it fed. When I’m hunting, I will write down notes of where game was seen, or what the weather conditions were. Fishing trip locations will be jotted down, what method was being used, how many fish were caught, what they were biting on, or what were the contents of their stomach when I cleaned them. Usually the log book resides in my backpack, which can be subject to getting wet when it rains. Rite in Rain makes a notebook that is waterproof and will not tear or bleed when it gets wet. Field notes are depended on year after year, Rite in the Rain provides a dependable surface to rely on even if your book gets wet. Learn more at http://www.riteintherain.com

Multi-use waders

Muck Boot Co. Deep Stalkers
A tough, SUV of waders offers removable chaps for use in thick cover.

Muck Boot Company is introducing a new breathable wader, tentatively called the "Deep Stalker. It incorporates a removable 900 denier polyester overchap. This will appeal to those who use their waders for double duty. If you are waterfowl hunting, you can attach the protective overchap to the waders for when you will be wearing the waders in thick/heavy brush. You can also remove the overchap for situations that will not be abusive to the waders, such as for fishing. This is the first time I have ever seen this type of design in a wader. Muck Boot has made knee high boots with sewn in protection before, but never a removable chap. Will the chap hold up and “stay up” when slogging through deep mud or heavy brush? Will the chap introduce discomfort, hinder mobility, or constrain the individual wearing them? A couple of potential issues may be introduced with the new protective layer, but if the Muck Boot history of quality products holds true, their design should give the outdoorsman a versatile and reliable pair of wading wear. Outdoor Media Awards Party
The Outdoor Channel hosted a big party for members of the outdoor media. The party featured a performance by country musician, Joe Diffie.

After the SHOT Show, I attended The Outdoor Channel’s industry party. I shook hands with a lot of nice people. It was a pleasure to meet people like John Birbari from Brunton. He shared stories, spoke about the show, and it was an enjoyable evening to spend with him. Also it was a pleasure to meet Wendy from The Outdoor Channel and I appreciated the party that they put on and the opportunity to partake in such a large event. Next year the SHOT Show will be in Orlando, with already more exhibit space reserved than this year, I might have to reserve an extra day or two in order to see it all next year. One day doesn’t do it justice.
