Prostaffer Picks Top 8 from SHOT

Xavier Limon - JHO ProStaff - Southern CA
March 07, 2006

JHO ProStaffer Xavier Limon joined Chris Fullilove and Phillip Loughlin at the 2006 Shooting Hunting and Outdoors Trade (SHOT) Show this past February in Las Vegas. There was a lot to see, and we hope to bring you reviews on several new and innovative items over the coming year. For now, here is Xavier's top 8 from the show.

Truesage

Truesage Camo
New patterns include the Truesage Mesa and Aspenstand (shown here).

The pioneers of camouflage designed for the western hunter have introduced two new patterns for 2006. The new patterns have been named Mesa Country and Aspenstand, and will be available in their full line of apparel. The Mesa Country is a blend of cedar, sage and other natural items. The Aspenstand is just that – aspen. Truesage has also introduced Storm Suede – a packable rain wear combo. This new line is 100% waterproof, windproof and most importantly, it’s breathable. These items are a must for the western hunter.

Eberlestock packs

Eberlestock Packs
Qualty packs come at a price. You get what you pay for.

If you spend any length of time with gear on your back, you understand the importance of a quality pack. You would appreciate a pack that was designed by hunters and for hunters. If you really had your choice, you’d probably choose an Eberlepack. And if you had to choose only one pack to do everything, you’d choose the Eberlepack “Just One Series” packs. Expandable from 2100 cubic inches to 7000 cubic inches, the Just One can handle everything you toss at it and for that matter, everything you toss into it. It has a built-in scabbard for rifle, shotgun or bow. Their use of multiple compartments versus one larger one prevents items from simply collecting at the bottom. Eberlestock packs are at the higher end of the price spectrum, but the quality of construction with allow years of continual use without problems.

SlingStix

Slingstix
Keep your shooting sticks right there with your gun.

If you are like me - you are always forgetting things when you go hunting. Checklist after checklist is marked off, but something still finds its way off the next list created. One of the items I always forget is shooting sticks. A new product released at this years SHOT show is SlingStix. It’s a simple concept – foldable shooting sticks that slide into a pocket of a gun sling. As long as you have your sling attached to your gun, you’ll never forget your shooting sticks. It does take some practice to unfold them quietly, but it can be done.

Shotpak

Shotpack
Dispense shells right into your hand, ready to load.

If you hate fumbling through your game bag looking for shells during a hot dove shoot, you’ll appreciate the ShotPak. It’s a simple device that dispenses your shells just like a belt, coin dispenser works. A simple push on a tab releases a shell into your hand ready to be loaded into your gun. It’s also great for the trap and skeet range with different color tabs for different caliber shells. The Shotpak is held in place via a belt clip or can be used with the new Shotpak SuperSlam vest.

All-Terrain seat

The All-Terrain Seat
The All-Terrain Seat... simple, sturdy, and adjustable. Will it work in the Mendota marsh mud?

The accessories market is full of hunting seats in all shapes and sizes. However, none of them measure up to the All-Terrain Seat by Rywar. It’s a basic tripod design, but what distinguishes this seat from the others is that every leg is fully adjustable from 13 18.5 inches, it has a 360 degree swivel cushioned seat. Even more is that the legs detach from the seat and slide into compartments built into the seat top. Better yet, it holds 500 pounds, they would have rated it higher, but they ran out of weight!

Trophy Blend scents

Trophy Blend Scents
Important tip - do NOT use this for deodorant, unless you want to get up close and personal with a large cervid.

Have you ever reached in your pack to pull out your bottle of doe estrus, only to find that the bottle has broken open and spilled all over? I must be the only one. From the folks at Trophy Shot Sports come “Trophy Blend” scent sticks. At first glance these appeared to be sticks of deodorant, but I quickly discovered that was not the intended use! There are 4 scents for elk, 4 for mule deer, 4 for whitetail, and 5 cover scents. These sticks can be used by wiping it on your boots, clothing or on rubs. Another use the company recommends is to use the cap to leave shavings on a trail. This is a product that will definitely find its way into my gear bag this season!

Remington Wingmaster HD

Remington HD
In 2006, Remington will replace Hevi-shot with it's new, HD shotshell ammunition.

At the end of last September, the contract between Remington and Hevi-Shot® ended. No longer will the Remington and Hevi-Shot logos appear on the same box. Remington has now introduced the Wingmaster HD shotshell into the high density shotshell market. Unlike other high density shells, the Wingmaster HD is perfectly round and has the appearance of a copper plated pellet. According to Remington, the new Wingmaster HD is 16% softer than Hevi-Shot which returns less damage to your barrel and better patterns. Remington will retail a box of 10 shells for around $20.

StikNtheMud

StikNtheMud
Ever wonder what to do with your shotgun while standing up to your chest in mud and water?

I’m sick and tired of my duck gun ending up sitting in the mud all day leaning against the blind. That’s why I’m going to pick up a StikNtheMud this offseason. The StikNtheMud is a very simple device. It is the kind of device when you look at it you think – “why didn’t I think of that”. At one end of the “stik” is a spade which you push into the mud. The upper portion of the “stik” is telescoping so that you can adjust it according to the depth of the water you are hunting in. A butt rest flips down and you rest your gun in the “barrel guide” on top. I’m sold!
