Giving Back to the Sport - Hosting a Hunt for Mobility Impaired Hunters

Recipe for a great day
An enthusiastic group of hunters and helpers made for a great day at the DFG's 8th Annual mobility impaired pheasant hunt.

Giving back …no we are not talking about proper field manners where one dog backs the point of another and honors the find of the first dog without producing the flight of the bird. I am speaking of our duty as hunters to constantly give a little back to our sport. This can be accomplished by supporting conservation groups in an effort to protect our hunting rights and the land on which we hunt. It is also our duty to bring in new people to our sport in order to preserve hunting heritage.

With that in mind, here is an idea that is fun and provides a service to others… organizing a hunt for mobility-impaired hunters.

Recipe for a successful hunt: mobility impaired hunters, volunteers from the local high school to push the wheel chairs, and a group of trained pointing dogs and their handlers. You’ll also need to have a flat field that is accessible to people with disabilities, and wheelchairs equipped with mountain bike tires.

Teamwork
A happy hunter and a well-trained bird dog.

Try contacting your local wildlife agency to see if such an opportunity exists in your area and if the answer is no, then try to get some help from them or from one of the local chapters of Pheasants Forever, Quail Unlimited or Wheelin’ Sportsmen (NWTF). I am sure the local Veterans Administration or rehab center in your area has some people who would like to take part in this type of hunt but thought it was no longer possible due to their injury.

It’s a great way to get more hunters out in the field and to practice your dog handling skills at the same time. Remember more birds make better gun dogs.
