Nice albacore for the smoker The author poses with a couple of fine "chickens of the sea" on board the Condor. |
“Hookuuuuuuuuuuuup!”
We were 85 miles due west of San Diego on the Condor when the trolling jigs got slammed by a tuna. The mad dash to reel in the other trollers and get baited hooks into the slide started. With 31 anglers on the boat and seven-foot chop, this was a good beginning to a day chasing the “chicken of the sea”.
Having boarded the boat at around 9:00 the night before, I woke up after a decent night’s sleep in a comfy, double-bunk in the Condor’s sleeping quarters. Breakfast and coffee were the first order of business. Both were easy to find, since the smells of bacon and java were what woke me up to begin with. With my appetite satisfied, I went up on deck to get ready for some bloody decks.
A few fish hit the trolling jigs throughout the morning and kept things exciting for a while, but then things shut down for a long time. At about noon, the jigs were hit again and this time we were able to get a few on bait rods as well. The shouts of “fresh one” and “color” started to fill the boat. Between 12 and 1:30 we landed most of our 32 fish and I was able to get two of them... some of them are cooking on my smoker as I write this.
With the albacore season getting under way, and the fish starting to show themselves, now is a great time to get out on a boat and chase these bruisers. Give the Condor out of Fisherman’s Landing a look. 90 feet of steel construction makes her a steady ride with tons of room at the rail. Her crew, led by Captain Scott Meisel, is more than capable of making your trip an exciting and enjoyable one. I will definitely be going back for more.
