Vulture Killing Program to Scale Back

The Associated Press,

(Richmond-AP) -- A U.S. Department of Agriculture program to kill Virginia vultures is being told to scale back.

The U-S-D-A's wildlife services program sought permission to kill up to 4,000 vultures in Virginia, but the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has issued an amended permit allowing the program to increase its vulture kills by 600 for a total of 1,250 kills.

The U-S-D-A program argues that vultures caused more than $320,000 in damage in Virginia from 1997 to 2001, but several Virginia scientists and bird aficionados said 4,000 was too many to kill, particularly when it is unclear just how many vultures live in Virginia.

The amended permit also denies the program the right to use bait to lure birds into traps.
